The "rat tail" is a 4 line crown atleast 6"-8" length. That's the way I made mine. I only worked my first 6 days drilling on the floor before I was promoted to Derrickman as I'd already had a few years "workover" derricks experience. I'm oilfield trash 20 yrs, since 1974 - 1993. I never made it to Driller because I never had any floorhands that could man my pumps and pits while I would be at the brake with my driller. I thought if I worked as the "motorman" I'd be at the brake also to relieve my driller for a meal or whatever. That rig I worked motors for was too old requiring too much of my attention.

Looks like he had no "rat tail" on that chain. That's what helps best to prevent the end of a chain link from slapping you.
