Which Runescape should you play?

thank you for the video, I will be playing runescape 3 as you have mentioned, it is lore heavy and not a grindfest. I'm not a returning player. I just want to get into runescape

I installed RuneScape classic on the steamdeck the other day after not playing in years. Seeing lumbridge again was really nostalgic, but seeing nobody else there was melancholic. I missed the days you could jump on, chaotic chats everywhere, and do whatever...fun times :')

I started on RS3 after eoc, switched to OSRS and haven’t left it since lol

Guild Wars 2 was doing well, but the recent expansions haven't been great.

Man, it's really fascinating to understand small things you never thought of before. Like why some content creators don't have a specific statue on its plinth anymore when they do shots of certain towns.

The lore behind Theater of Blood is fucking great though. The entire Myreque quest line is absolutely baller.

They chose the "300 million players" tagline mainly for RS3 because despite what it is now, that is the version of the game that has existed, and/or evolved since classic. The OG players accounts are still there and intact, and so are the old items, and things like vet capes and untradable event items that make players feel special for being there from the beginning.

OSRS has a more active and engaged player base for sure, they also have more bots for sure.

Despite RS3 having a lot of issues, it is more accessible and the more modern paint job is more attractive to new players. Players who care about their original accounts and "prestige" or whatever you want to call it, prefer RS3. New players are more likely to be drawn into RS3 because it is not nearly as grindy/time sink, and looks better, and has a more familiar, modern "ability bar" (but IMO an inferior) combat system.

The vast majority of people playing OSRS, are people who played back in the day, and have huge nostalgia, but never acquired or don't care about the legacy items or account cosmetics etc that "main game" players hang onto.

New players are much less likely to be drawn to OSRS, even simple things like walking everywhere with limited run energy, compared to lodestones, practically unlimited run energy etc QOL that RS3 provides.

OSRS players are one of two mindsets. 1. People who correctly recognise that RS3 is barely RuneScape anymore, and they want the old and unique experience they had when they were a kid. 2. People who genuinely love the grind, the game isn't objectively more difficult, in fact of end game PvM RS3 is objectively harder. But things like 99's skills, maxing accounts, diaries, questing etc while mechanically simple, are difficult through being tedious and time gated. The challenge (at least in PvE and account progression, PVP is a different beast.) isn't generally in things like quick reactions or physically demanding mechanical skill, the difficulty is in the players own mind, their endurance and fortitude, their battle against monotony, entropy, or bad RNG, that feeling you get when you finally reach a goal, or obtain a rare drop, that you have spent hundreds of hours grinding for, that dopamine burst, that validation that you rode out the grind, refused to quit, powered through until you succeeded. That is a feeling that is missing in a lot of games these days.

But RS3 is the game where people who started playing in 2001 can flex their "veteran capes" and their discontinued items, the whole 300 million accounts marketing push had two targets. 1. The original players, from classic or RS2, as a flex of longevity rather than popularity. 2. A grab for new players, a disingenuous but technically true statement to create a facade of popularity and activity, to draw in new people.

I played Runescape for about 1 to 2 years when I was a child. Back in the day only a fraction of our population internet access and computers were (still are, by the way) hella expensive, so we had one friend who owed one and we took turns. Nor me or my friends knew how to speak english and because internet was a luxury, content in our language didn't really exist. Needless to say, not only we were stupid because children, we were playing blind and because we took turns, we never really got to develop our characters a whole lot.

I don't remember which year it was exactly, but when we started, dungeons weren't released yet, but they came out later and when it did, I actually liked doing dungeons just as much as playing the game itself.

Skip to present day, when I got into Runescape 3, the game was confusing and nearly irrecognizable. Meanwhile, OSRS has no dungeons. So I basically play OSRS by default, but I also play Runescape 3 for the dungeons.

Both, the answer is both... they're the "same" but you get a very different experience with each one.

OSRS is superior. I love questing to get interesting gear or to get new quests where I can get even better gear. Also the bossfights are lovely and the most qiest got a huge amount of humor. I remember that I pushed a rock to get a unicorn horn 💀😂

I tried jumping back into Maplestory in 2024 after taking a break on my Lv 19X Kanna that I had quit like 10 years prior. I had absolutely no idea where I was anymore or what I had been doing (Probably mindless grinding). Uninstalled it like 2 hours later because it just felt so foreign.

I had thought about starting on a new character with the new hyper leveling system they added, but it just felt like it went against the spirit of the game from back in the day to hit like level 140 in under an hour.

Actually, you can't buy as many keys as you want. There's a cap.... of 500 a day. In support of "mental health".... yeah right.
