I thought it after the first watch and I still make the same assessment. Benitez spent to much of his time trying to impress or befriend Sugar as opposed to wanting to ACTUALLY fight him. This was a 6-performance, knowing the boxing acumen of Benitez leading up to this fight. Staredown aside, Benitez was almost too thankful for the opportunity to fight Leonard (and by association make a glut of money) and it showed throughout this fight, IMHO!!!

This was a great performance from Leonard, had Benitez completely lost on how to get to him. Thru 14 rounds I had the fight 138-127 for Leonard.

If Ray Leonard got his start as a pro in the early 90s, he would have had about a dozen bouts and then won the 140 lb title first.

1979 I was a freshman in High School and I was so impressed with these Highly Elite fighters, I Followed SRL up until he retired.

I watched this fight live when I was 10 years old. I remember it was a Friday night and it was on ABC TV with Howard Cosell announcing. I can't believe I did it, but I watched all 15 rounds... I can't believe such a big fight was on broadcast television but it was... this fight launched my interest in boxing which would last until the Holyfield Bowe second fight

Benitez was such a great sportsman... he actually scored well in the 15th despite being outboxed most of the fight by talented SRL, great fight. Both guys were obviously in excellent shape.

Wilfred could have won this. A little too much respect cost him. He set up plenty of shots and didn't go for it.

These men were total warriors and gentlemen. No thug behavior and mindless profanity, total class. Can’t say the same about today’s boxers.

His amateur coach named him sugar, because he was molesting the young teenager. If Leonard didn't stay in the game to long, he would have had only one loss.

Now very important Thank you Angelo, maybe one of the best trainers ever, also the late great Sarg Johnson, Eddie Futch, also George Benton, and the late great Manny Steward, these guys were some of the greatest trainers ever in boxing but knuckle heads like Larry Merchant and Al Berenstein Bear and Jim Lampley put up there just to dis- credit great fighters always underestimating the great and phenomenal black fighters on a reg biging up white mediocre fighters, like Don Lalonde who really wasn’t that good, and Sugar Ray completely destroyed him, knocking him out, but all you heard from these bums is oh how will Sugar react to Donnie’s right hand Sugar had no problem, but not to Lieing Larry, Same with Jerry Cooney a Nothing glass jaw but to them and Howard Cossell he hit harder the George Forman one of Georgie’s sweetest KOs so it’s nice to hear real anylists talk the truth instead of no nothing props the the Larry, Jim, and Howard! Thank you

Leonard fue el primer boxeador, en llevarse un millón de dollar en esa pelea, bajando el billete de los pesados al welter, todavía no existía, el pagar por ver.
