Radlers, Shandies, and Spritzers have long histories rooted in refreshing, low-alcohol drinks that mix beer, wine, or other spirits with fruit juices, soda, or other mixers. Each has a distinct backstory, but they all share a common purpose: creating a lighter, thirst-quenching beverage ideal for warm weather and social gatherings.
Radlers
The Radler has origins in early 20th-century Germany. The term "Radler" translates to "cyclist" in German, and the drink is often associated with bikers. According to legend, in 1922, Franz Xaver Kugler, an innkeeper in Bavaria, found himself short on beer when a group of thirsty cyclists arrived at his tavern. To stretch his stock, he mixed the beer with lemon soda. The resulting drink, which became known as the Radlermaß or simply Radler, became an instant hit, appreciated for its refreshing taste and lower alcohol content. This mix of light beer and lemonade or lemon soda has since evolved and spread, with numerous variations now popular worldwide.
Shandies
Shandy, originating in Britain in the mid-19th century, initially referred to a mixture of beer and ginger ale or ginger beer. It is thought that the word "shandy" may be short for shandygaff, a term used as early as the 1850s to describe a beer-and-ginger-beer concoction. Over time, the shandy evolved to include other mixers, such as lemonade or other citrus sodas, often creating a lighter and sweeter taste. While traditional British shandies commonly use ginger beer or lemonade, modern variations incorporate a range of sodas or juices. Shandies became especially popular in the UK during the summer months and spread globally, with regions adding their own twists, like the Caribbean’s Shandy Carib, often made with sorrel or ginger.
Spritzers
The Spritzer has its roots in Austria and central Europe, dating back to the 19th century. It started as a way to lighten wine and make it more refreshing and suitable for casual drinking, especially in hot weather. The term "spritzer" comes from the German word spritzen, meaning "to spray" or "splash," referring to the addition of sparkling water to dilute the wine. Originally, it was common to add soda water to white wine, creating a bubbly, refreshing drink that was lower in alcohol than wine alone. Spritzers later evolved into an international phenomenon, with regional variations adding fruit or using different wines, spirits, and liqueurs. The Italian Aperol Spritz, combining Aperol, prosecco, and soda water, is one of the most famous modern examples, popular as an aperitivo in Italy and beyond.
Shared Appeal and Modern Trends
These drinks share a history of being easy to drink, adaptable, and low in alcohol, making them ideal for hot climates or active days. The resurgence of craft brewing and mixology has led to a renaissance for radlers, shandies, and spritzers, with new flavors, unique ingredients, and innovations like canned versions and craft brews expanding their appeal.
