Extra Packages for Enterprise Linux (EPEL) is a package repository that provides additional packages that are not included in standard Rocky Linux / RHEL / CentOS repositories.

Fedora community maintains the EPEL repository.

This guide helps you how to enable EPEL repository on Rocky Linux 8 / CentOS 8 / RHEL 8.

Enable EPEL Repository
The EPEL repository can be enabled by installing EPEL repository configuration rpm.

Rocky Linux 8 / CentOS 8
dnf install -y epel-release

Additionally, enable the PowerTools repository since EPEL packages may depend on packages from it.

dnf config-manager --set-enabled PowerTools

RHEL 8
dnf install -y https://dl.fedoraproject.org/pub/epel/epel-release-latest-8.noarch.rpm

Additionally, enable Code ready builder repository on RHEL 8 since EPEL packages may depend on packages from it.

ARCH=$( /bin/arch )

subscription-manager repos --enable "codeready-builder-for-rhel-8-${ARCH}-rpms"

List Available Packages On EPEL repository
dnf list available --disablerepo=* --enablerepo=epel

What is the Rocky Linux project?
Rocky Linux is a community enterprise operating system designed to be 100% compatible with America's leading enterprise Linux distribution now that its middle partner has changed direction. It is under intensive development by the community. Rocky Linux is led by Gregory Kurtzer, founder of the CentOS project. There is no estimated release date. Contributors are requested to communicate with the communication options offered on this site.

What does it mean that, "Your former partner has changed address?"
The CentOS project recently announced a change in CentOS strategy. Whereas CentOS previously existed as a top-down build from its upstream provider (it receives patches and updates after the upstream provider does), it will be downgraded to a bottom-up build (testing for patches and updates before being included in the upstream provider). Additionally, support for CentOS Linux 8 has been discontinued, changing the end of support from May 31, 2029 to December 31, 2021.

So where does Rocky Linux come in?
Rocky Linux aims to function as a top-down build as CentOS had previously done, building versions after they have been added by the upstream provider, not before.
