It’s incredibly bizarre how Heemeyer has somehow been spun into the victim of this story. The Docheff family wants to buy part of his land that used to be family land, which he agrees to. Then Marvin doubles the price, which they agree to. Then he ups it again. When the Docheffs naturally reject this deal, Heemeyer becomes belligerent. When the Docheffs instead buy a neighboring plot of land, Marvin dumps sewage into nearby waterways and builds a killdozer to destroy their property and a dozen town buildings with innocent civilians including children inside. But somehow, the Internet thinks he’s a victim, instead of a completely sociopathic tool, because of funny video.

This was a one sided telling of what happened. Yes, Marvin got screwed a few times but it was his own uncompromising and stubborn attitude that made it all go from bad to worse. He was also not in his right mind and was probably suffering from some kind of mental illness. He genuinely believed that the whole town was out to get him and that they had all conspired to work together to screw him over.

It’s funny to me that their thought process was “we need to prevent admirers from keeping souvenirs of this thing” and not “we need to act in a way that does not cause people to admire him”

I...*highly* recommend getting multiple sides of this story. I'll give one example and then I'll shut up. According to city records, Hemeyer had been just dumping his sewage into a ditch behind the garage for years, despite getting multiple warnings and fines from the city that he needed to either hook up to the sewer or install a septic tank. Because, you know, that's nasty. But he refused to do it, essentially dumping poop on the neighbor's property. If you want to hook your house up to municipal sewer lines, there's a window of opportunity for that, it can't really be done retroactively. Hemeyer was made aware of this YEARS in advance. He had the money to do either. He just wouldn't spend it, believing it was his God-given right to dump his shit on his neighbor's property.

Putting it mildly, the dude was an arsehole from the very beginning.

Hey - I watched the Killdozer episode on Fascinating Horror and there were some key differences. For example, they claimed that the guy had never connected to town sewage, but used a buried cement truck as a septic tank. They said the cost to connect to town sewage would have been twice what he paid for the land. Also they said the concrete plant did not actually block access to his muffler shop, even though he insisted that it did. They made him out to be increasingly paranoid and delusional, and not at all the hero that some people would prefer.
I wonder what are the real facts…

The best part of this is the design teams who were innovating on the Abrams actually used some of the killdozer design choices to improve on the Abrams design. The idea to bring in the military to handle the situation was probably the most reasonable one they had. The steel plating was between 15 mma nd 30 mm, with quikrete (not concrete) poured between them rated for 5,000 psi. C4 shaped charges had no effect, they needed to use a ton of thermite just to take it apart. With all that being said, even the Bushmaster on a Bradley would be incapable of penetrating the armor Heemeyer had constructed. It wasn't the plating that made it so powerful, it was the surprisingly shock absorbant quikrete behind the plates that made all the difference, giving it the equivalent hardness to about 300 mm of rolled homogenous steel armor. They would have need modern, high velocity armor piercing rounds of at least 120 mm.
