i used to work in a hospital (now demolished) which used to be a victorian asylum. you had to have special permission (which i luckily got) and i wasn't allowed to photograph it. but there were undergound wards. it was like the inside of a cathederal. but absolutely no windows or natural light there. the wards were like a prison. there were two wards there that i remember. they were the 'syphillis ward' and the 'idiot ward'. the doors had little hatches at the bottom where they used to feed their patients and just a little spy-hole that they could glimpse out of. it was so eerie as you could imagine the smell and cries that came from it.
