Please consider visiting Calloway Gardens in Pine Mountain, GA. It's a beautiful place to make a video. It's not far off I-85 near the GA/AL state line. Any time would be good, but it's particularly known for all its varieties of azaleas with bloom in spring and early summer.

Question from Atlanta zone 8a. I started salvia blue bedder from seed in April and repotted 3 plants into 9" terra cotta pots in June. They are just now blooming for the first time. What's the best strategy for getting these plants through the winter? Should I plant them in the ground or leave them in pots? Other than the rain from Helene, Atlanta has been very dry and other plants I planted in spring have really struggled. I'd appreciate any advice - love the channel!

Is it possible to transplant a forest pansy redbud when it goes dormant? I live in CT Zone 6 and the tree is 3 yrs old, 5’ x 5’ . I’ve heard mixed info about when to transplant or even if possible to transplant. It is located incorrectly. If not possible to transplant, can it be size controlled? Really appreciate all your knowledge

We have been having 80 degree days & 50 ish at night. It’s going to frost in a few days. I have been moving perennials & planting many new ones. Have I made a mistake? They aren’t going to have time to root in before the coming frost. NWTN zone 7

Jim, if I collect seed from my pink and red Summer Jewels Salvia, could the highschool ag class sell the resulting plants as long as the "Summer Jewels" name wasn't used?
I feel bad complaining about dry weather in my piece of north Georgia given what so many are still dealing with.

Hi Jim, I’m in south East Tennessee zone 7B/8A. I’m facing a nightmare situation with Bermuda grass having crept all over two large 50’ x 8 ‘ garden beds that I had prepared this summer using cardboard, cow manure and a thick layer of wood chips on top. My plan is to start planting conifers and evergreen privacy shrubs this fall. Any ideas for getting rid of the grass? I’m open to using chemical sprays if needed.

My smoke bush bloomed twice this year too before it lost most of its foliage. It was growing really fast all of the sudden once the heatwave ended.

Hi Jim - my dog blasted one of my oakleaf hydrangeas in pursuit of a squirrel, breaking it at the base of the plant. I've staked/tied it together as best I can and to my surprise, it is still alive a week later (leaves are still turgid). Will the breakage heal like a grafted plant, or should I just replace it now? It is in a grouping of 3 that I just planted this spring, so I'd like for all 3 to be roughly the same size -- I don't know if the break will cause it to be less vigorous.

You seem to be pretty lucky with the wood chips.
Ar least around here you better know where they came from because people have had gardens destroyed by herbicides, pesticides, disease and insects from free wood chips.

I have 4 gallon size Burgmansis that I started from seed last spring…now what?…I’m in zone 8b and I am pretty sure they must be zone 10 at least…. I could put them in a cool room, kept above 50 but not too bright light, or an unheated garage with pretty good light…any ideas? Not really worried, minimal investment…

Question. This may have been covered previously but is there any way to stop my Bermuda grass from creeping into my garden beds? Weed whacking is difficult for my hands with the vibration of the tool. My garden beds are around the perimeter of my house and are edged. The Bermuda is aggressive and other than spraying it with grass killer I don’t know how to control it.

Where can I learn about a plant's root structure? The NC Extension Gardner Plant Toolbox has so much fabulous info but does not mention roots. To put plants close together, a tap root next to a surface rooter works so much better than two surface rooters so this info would be helpful in choosing plants, not just transplanting them.

?? Zone 7A,(south central PA) planted 3 hardy hibiscus last year, in early August this year they slowly stopped producing flowers not sure what the issue is, I kept them watered and in good sun. Google says possibly thrips or potassium. Do I totally give up on them for next year or can they come back from either of those? Any other feedback would be helpful. I moved a double blue balloon flower that’s been in the same spot for 15 yrs. A tree has since cast too much shade. Every where I look it says doesn’t transplant due to deep taproot and boy when I dug it up it had some big fat long taproots. Looked like I had just taken a fence post out with the long narrow rootball it had, but it’s still alive doesn’t look good 😂 but hopefully next spring it comes back full like nothing happened

Seconding what Jim said about "doing it in the fall" re Sulfur for hydrangeas, Sulfur takes a good 6 months+ for the microbes to convert it to the right form (sulfate). Aluminum sulfate is quicker, but many question using it for acidification other than for hydrangeas (which want the aluminum for blueness).

Compared to a dogwood, a redbud has somewhat deeper roots and is harder to move. At least that is my sense from moving a good few of both. With both, I agree with the shape of rootball Jim suggested to dig.

Jim, I'm trying to improve the clay soil in an existing bed with several established trees and shrubs. Can I add several inches of wood chips like you recommend? I'm afraid that will effectively lead to the trees and shrubs being planted too deep. If that isn't an option, is there anything I can do in this situation to improve the soil?

I have a Jazz Hands Loropetalum that has grown to "it's size". It only shows the variegation where I've pruned it. If I get another one, how small do you think I would/could keep it to have more variegation? I don't care about the flowers. How often would I be able to prune it to get "new" foliage?
