What is the Kratky method?
Growing leafy greens and vegetables using the kratky method is essentially a passive way to grow them hydroponically. There is no aeration, or moving water (typically), it’s a container that holds all the nutrients your plant needs to thrive. Essentially you need A plant, fertilizer, and a container!

Starting the Kratky Method or hydroponics can be overwhelming, as there are lots of different ways! My recommendation is to first, use what you have handy, don’t be afraid to try it your own way, and of course, have fun with it! You can make a kratky or hydroponic garden as big or as little as you want! But with any endeavor, you must first gather some basic supplies!

Kratky Supplies (that I use)
Containers! You can collect plastic or glass bottles. Typically I look for glass jars or bottles with a 2 to 3 inch opening. If I am using plastic containers, they generally need a lid, and depending on the size of the container (and what you are trying to grow) will depend on where you make a hole to place the plant into. Some of my favorite containers to use are small jars (pickles, cherries, spaghetti sauce etc), and my favorite plastic containers are yogurt or soup containers, or medium sized storage containers (see video).

You will need something to create holes with in the plastic containers. I have used a drill (1 1/3 in hole drill), I have used a plastic melting tool, and I have used a razor to freestyle a hole. You can of course make wider holes for larger plants like tomatoes and peppers.

Hydroponic cups (Net Cups, or I call them “Netty Cups” and I got them from Amazon or Temu), and 2 inches is what I typically use. They sell them in 2 in and 3 in size. These will be placed inside the holes and hold the plants above the water. HOWEVER, you can make “foam collars” from the pool noodle if you don’t want to spend extra money or cannot find good foam collars.

Clay Pebbles. Amazon or local nursery. These pebbles with hold the plant or seedling sturdy inside the net cut. You do not need pounds of them. I think I ordered a pound of them and still have at least half left (I will check and edit) I have rinsed and sterilized them, and used them over and over.

Foam Collars or Pool Noodles (Foam Collars either Amazon or Temu, and pool noodles at any Dollar store or of course Walmart.) You will use these to go around the seedling or plant, to stabilize the plant, and to block out light. If buying pool noodles, recommend getting the two Inch and the three inch size (most spaghetti jars are 3 inches wide).

Fertilizer- I have only tried AERO Garden (liquid for hydroponics), and MasterBlend (which comes in different ratios, but I have been using the Tomato Blend, and have purchased it from Amazon, and it usually comes with Calcium Nitrate, and you will also need Epsom Salt, to make the mixture of those three DRY ingredients. I typically make either 1 or 5 gallons masterblend fertilizer. There are lots of different hydroponics fertilizer available. If you find another one that works well, please share it!

And Epsom Salt

ROCK WOOL- If you will be growing or sprouting your own seeds, I like to use the rock wool (available in nurseries, Amazon, Temu etc). Sometimes I sow the seeds in the rock wool directly in the net cups, or I make sure they sprout, and then place them into the net cups and then containers.

If you are growing indoors, you will want to consider adding lights! These are the ones I ordered from Amazon.
