Hardware cloth and chicken wire are completely different. And there is also gopher wire.
i have extensive experience working with all the wires and with bird netting...and with keeping out squirrels, voles, gophers, mice, rats, rabbits, etc. It is a battle! Luckily, I don't have deer. There is information out there about which wire to use, when and how, which I seem to find after using the wrong one and having to redo the bed. I am going to try the peppermint oil cotton balls in the tunnels under the lawn and raised beds. THANKS!

I have squirrels climbing our trellis to get to the top where birds have a nest under our gutter. I am looking for a solution to keep them from climbing but allowing the plants to grow and the birds to survive. Thank you.

I'm so glad that you brought up the dangers of bird nets. Decades ago, not knowing any better, we put bird netting on a cherry tree. Days later, I sadly found a dead bird caught in it, unable to have gotten loose. It made me very sad and I vowed never to use that again. I'd rather the birds eat the cherries and live. Thank you for a very informative video. Squirrels are the bane of my existence!!

I’ve found that putting a border of little twigs and bamboo sticks about an inch apart in a circle around newly transplanted / establishing seedlings helps them digging those up.

They ARE EATING MY PLANTS! The rabbits don't climb or jump onto my tall containers. The squirrel just climbs the height of any container or wire no matter how high. I have to cover the entire top of the containers.

They don't like hot peppers I've used it. The hotter the better. The hot bird feed is junk plus it's expensive. If you have hot spices mix every kind you have in a zip lock with the bird feed and watch they will try it and if they eat it's not hot enough. Now I'm going to grind hot peppers and strain the seeds and anything else mix with water ad drops of dish soap and spray around the garden and see what happens

Man, I think the squirrels have been digging up my baby plants just out of spite. They pulled everything up, without having anything at all to bury in the spots. So many of my native flower seedlings died. But this time I'm spraying peppermint water mixed with some cayenne, in addition to lightly sprinkling cayenne powder.. I heard cayenne isn't great for the soil or pollinators, but hoping a few small doses wouldn't hurt, long before flowers show up. Gotta just wait for the soil to settle so they'll lose interest. Gonna try the peppermint cotton balls next!

Oooo chicken wire. I didnt think of that yet. My problem is chipmunks. Squirrels around here only cone for bird seed than run back to the woods. I have at 4 chipmunks than do all the digging & boy what a battle it's been. They dont often harm the plants but they will eat my squash & marigold tops. Just bite it off & leave a stumped stem. So I use recycled plastic bottles as little green houses as well as a barrier to keep them uninterested. Works great. Gotta try the chicken wire thing though.

I’m having digging issues right now. It seemed to help a lot about a month ago using the cayenne powder, but I just realized I have a bag of about 30 frozen Carolina reapers I harvested last fall. They’ve disturbed a couple of my carrots and onions, and are getting too close for comfort to my bell peppers and lettuce, and the holes have gotten bigger lately… they even half buried a strawberry runner. I think it’s time to dehydrate those peppers and make weapons grade squirrel repellent.

direct sowed some flower seeds the other day. squirrels aren't interested in eating them but their digging in the garden means the seeds end up in weird places and also they're supposed to be covered by soil but won't be. Covered with cayenne powder didn't do any good ... and of course then it rained (I'm in Seattle so that's a regular problem with deterrents lol). I've now covered the area with a few small plastic tunnels, fingers crossed

i dont consider squirrels pests at all. They are cute and if you put some bird feeders elsewhere they will leave your garden mostly alone. Add in some hot pepper plants and peppermint and they will go away from your veggies. I love squirrels though i dont even mind if they have some of my plants. They are so cute and they need to eat too!

I've had pretty good success with peppermint oil as well. And I have to say I bet my property gives you a run for your money on the amount of squirrel s. Surrounding by big walnut and oak trees. (Very healthy squirrels)

1. Chicken wire WORKS. - not sure why some people ares saying it doesn’t - not sure what they are using. As far as the spices go- they do work - BUT - if the squirrel /rabbit has ALREADY been digging around - they will go through fire to get to the food source again so its advantageous to apply before planting.

I truly believe squirrels are eating my broccoli. I have netting over a 5x5 bed so white butterflies don't lay eggs, but the leaves on broccoli are gone. I have inspected for worms and nothing. But I have caught squirrels in the garden. In the bed I have planted 2 cabbage, 1 brussel sprouts and 2 broccoli, and ONLY the broccoli has been touched. I am at my wits end so I am thankful for these tips. I will use them and see what happens. Thanks so much Luke for your time and knowledge of these things. I appreciate you.

It sounds to me that "civilized" modern living is creating a lot of problems for gardeners and farmers (the real smart, futuristic people). Those many garden pests are multiplying madly probably because they have no natural predators, when in the past (no supermarkets with meat) people hunted them, ate them, used their fur, etc.....
And there are more and more people who are against killing and eating them! Soon, humans have to "move out" of the Earth, chased by pests like squirrels and mice. Crazy, crazy! Stop the world , I want to get off!

Thank you but for me chicken wire is too wide, those critters got right in... So what I did was completely frame out and line the bottom and entire tomatoe box with a small square patterned fencing, rather thick so they can't bite through it.... you can use wood to make the frame, or even the 1" plastic steaks, the really tall ones to hold tomatoes as the frame,... then make a door you can open... works great... and you can even keep the plants upright using the fence on top...
