What happened at the Pool of Bethesda?

Located in the Old City of Jerusalem by the ancient Sheep Gate, this massive pool served as a community mystical healing center. According to legend, the angel of God would descend here and stir the water on occasion, and the first sick person to enter the water would be miraculously healed. At this pool, according to John’s Gospel, Jesus healed the lame man who laid helpless and hopeless for 38 years.

John 5:
Verses 1-3: "Now there is at Jerusalem by the sheep market a pool, which is called in the Hebrew tongue Bethesda, having five porches. In these lay a great multitude of impotent folk, of blind, halt, withered, waiting for the moving of the water."

Verses 5-6: "And a certain man was there, which had an infirmity thirty and eight years. When Jesus saw him lie, and knew that he had been now a long time in that case, he saith unto him, Wilt thou be made whole?"

Verses 8-9: "Jesus saith unto him, Rise, take up thy bed, and walk. And immediately the man was made whole, and took up his bed, and walked: and on the same day was the sabbath."
