Electricians trick when stripping off the insulation, hold the wire at about a 45 degree angle so it sits in the recessed groove on the strippers. Bite down and bring the strippers to a 90 and pull off. Works nearly every time, no twisting and less chance of damaging the conductors.

Corded days are gone... battery power now... I’ve been framing since the mid-80s... I do not miss the cords or the air hoses

So for a 13 amp skilsaw, is it ok to use a 14Ga cord??

Cannot see the wisdom in this. Framed for years, wrapped up saws and cords thousands of times and could never understand why someone would want 50 feet of cord attached to a 10 pound saw. 6 or 8 feet is plenty. Have a 25 and 50 ft handy. Much easier to wrap up a cord NOT attached to a bulky saw.

May I ask a question: apart from being a thicker gauged wire, why not simply plug it into an extension cord with a knot with the lead that preventing accidental disconnection?

Per your instructions, I added a 12 guage 40' cord to my worm drive. In retrospect, it seems obvious to do so. Now my knotted extension cord doesn't get caught on rafters or come loose & unplug. It's also funny when guys try to "borrow" my extension cord then discover it's the power cord to my worm drive. The only change was I installed a red one to match the handles. This is a game changer! I've learned a lot from your videos. I also never thought to plunge cut into a rafter edge when the pitch won't allow me to utilize the rafter hook. Thank you, sir.

I would recommend to crimp some end sleeves on bare copper strands that should make the connections more resistant to oxidation. Or use tinned strands but I prefer to use sleeves

I absolutely love this idea! This is probably a dumb question, but could I just buy a 40-50 ft , 12 guage extension cord and snip the female end off it and attach to the saw?

Ответить
@TNtoolman
@TNtoolman - 06.04.2023 18:10

For the past 40 years or so I've done the same thing... a 25 ft. 12 gauge wire because you always need an extension cord with a new. This eliminates the need... and over 90% of the time my cuts are less than 25 ft. from the outlet.

Adding a strain relief with a loop about 2 to 3 feet from the saw. That way you can hook the loop on the strain relief on the stud hook on the saw. So when you lower the saw from the cord your not pulling on the handle.

Late to the party but an electrician here Don't use one of the replacement cord ends osha inspectors will give you a hard time just get a normal 50 foot extension cord and cut off the female end Tell him you had a certified tool technician put it on

Friend of mine goes the opposite direction. He cuts the cords on on his tools down to about 6-8".

He figures that he's always going to be using it with an extension cord anyway, so there's no need for a 6 foot cord on the tool. And at the end of the day he doesn't have to wind up any power tool cords; he just throws it in the truck box and drives off.

He's a welder, not a carpenter, so that might make a difference in which way you go with the cord.

I just purchased my first Skil Worm Drive saw, I've used the sidewinder type saws for years....finally decided to buy a worm drive, and I think adding a longer cord makes a lot of sense....I never did it on any of my old circular saws, I always just cussed every time the dang cord came unplugged from the extension cord LOL. I think a 25-50 foot cord would probably be about right for around the house....so...the better question is, in 50+ years why has a long cord on a skill saw not been the standard cord length that the manufacturer puts on the saw LOL....I mean they're supposedly making these saws for construction use, apparently nobody at Skil has been to a jobsite to see how far from an outlet you are in many cases.

I checked the gearcase lube level when I first got the saw and its pretty low....not a single hardware store in town carries the worm drive oil...weird, they are supposed to be hardware stores yet they don't have any clue what that oil is, but they sell the saws. Anyhow, ordered the oil hopefully I'll have it tomorrow and I'll put the saw to use as I've got a bunch of shelving to start putting up in the shop, and working on the flooring installation as well.

This saw is heavy, but to me it feels like it would be much easier to control especially for ripping down sheet goods.

The single most important thing to remember is OSHA does not accept modifications to tools. I had 100’ cords on my saw and drill for many years. The advantages are real. Also we used to buy SJ 12-3 cords for our replacement. SJ cords are flexible and narrower in diameter.

This is a solid idea and appears to be super easy with this video! I assume a lot of other different corded power tools are wired similar. In that case, just take a picture with your phone of what color wire goes where.

I would have benefitted a bit more if the “wiring up” procedure was a little more comprehensive. This was the first time I ever tried something like this and you lost me once you got the cover off (as far as the circuitry portion). Love your content, just a bit of feedback. Thanks for all your videos.
