My 10 year old has just been diagnosed as dyslexic & I’m excited for her future. She is an incredible storyteller & artist & has a passion for horses. She has her challenges but they don’t define her.

I was told too i m a dyslexia kid … I use to get dragged out of my classes n have a 1 to 1 sessions … the teacher I had ( Mrs Reece) she was useless …. I been bullied online for my grammar … but to b fair … it’s never bothered me …. I’m proud of who I am … still trying to find a life I dream of… which I know doesn’t exist yet …. But I love not being like everyone else … because it who i am …. I resonate so nicely with Jamie Oliver 😊…. I’m just happy to know I am the physics ❤️☺️
…. What will I do … only god knows 😁…. But to wake up every morning n know I’m not doing routine work … puts a spark in my life …. I’m not struggling… I’m just on my journey to my final destination… sometimes it not easy …. But the fact that I love 😊 being me is what motivates me …

I’m not your average girl 😊…
And I’m definitely not settling for the known …. Because my life is Gigantic 🤙🏾🙏🏼

I will make a path ❤

I have struggled and experienced great frustration and challenges throughout my educational career due to dyslexia. As a mental disorder it makes the rare at which I acquire knowledge from my studies and concentration on my work ethic and time devoted to studying hard. When I was in 11th grade I arrived to class one afternoon in a terrible state over having failed the class after so much devotion, hard work and efforts and time. My teacher and I arranged a separate conference and I seriously broke in front of her explains the pain I witness from dyslexia. Since then I received significant assistance for and am preparing my properly written college essays.

I think we need to rethink this whole school is to help us become good people. Actually that's the parent's job, and school shouldn't be imposing a value system of 'good' and 'bad' on us, because that's just handing over power to people whose values maybe or may not be what we consider good. Look no further that the people who think for the sake of good they have carte blanche to teach white kids they are inherently bad. When exactly did society at large decide that racism for the sake of some bizarre and twisted idea of 'equity' was cool? That's what we get when schools start imposing values on kids. If schools can keep kids from shooting each other, a feat they've yet to master, I'd call that moral success.

I was labelled as “thick in the head” and put into special needs, pocked fun of infront of the whole class by the students as well as the teachers and spent the whole of my working life hiding that I couldn’t spell or read, by working in any job that was simple and didn’t involve writing. The shame and stress I felt for over 35 years, that someone will find me out was immense.

Now I finally know I’m dyslexic (was in denial, because I was told it’s a mental disability) and understand what it is, I don’t need to be ashamed of it any longer.
So thankful people have done so much research on it over the last 20 years and that many famous/successful people have come out telling the public about their challenges.

I don’t need to feel small anymore!

Never let dyslexia deter you. I found out I was dyslexic aged 54 yrs when training to be a police emergency call handler. I did struggle to become a call handler but managed it by opening my eyes to dyslexia and realising I was still the same person I had been for 54yrs.

The problem with this narrative is it doesn’t decrease the number of people with learning disorders, it’s a knee bending exercise to empower these kids which is needed but at the same time most of them are anti social and then your going to give them a “fair go” meaning job so they can breed and have more disabled children, turn around 10 years late to find nothing left.
People aren’t really that serious about really fixing the problem, pushing this faulty humanitarian all the while empowering disabled people to reproduce.

School for me was hard work and horrible at times because of being Dyslexic, Dyspraxic and Dyscalulic and I was bullied a lot. I liked some of school but it has taken me just over 15 years to get to a point there I am happy in myself.

My 12-year-old son has dyslexia. He is an INCREDIBLE kid who is determined, dedicated, creative, imaginative, and innovative! Unfortunately, our school system has done him a true injustice, despite my fight, by offering him ZERO help; they attribute their neglect to his A-and-B-only grades. However, they don’t witness the HOURS UPON HOURS he pours into schoolwork [nightly], not to mention the FLOODS of frustrated and discouraged tears upon tears that he cries. I’M SHOWING HIM THIS VIDEO AS SOON AS HE GETS HOME FROM SCHOOL TODAY!
He loves both athletics and any/all creative outlets— including cooking! Who knows?! Maybe HE will be an amazing/successful CHEF someday! Maybe HE will share his own stories to inspire the masses! ♥️
THANK YOU for sharing, Jamie! ♥️

I feel like schools measure you to much and what makes me unhappy is when schools don't have the funding to help them test students for Dyslexia. And it is not all schools but I do think it does not need to be based on measurement

It's not about how smart you are...it is how you are smart. Dyslexia is a gift. My son is dyslexic and he is an accomplished chef like Jamie now, but school was a nightmare for him. Thankfully, we survived with the help of others who understood. One of which was a book by Ronald D. Davis called 'The Gift of Dyslexia'. Quite enlightening.

I finally broke down crying in my supervisors office and told her that I'm dyslexic and now I have a special training for the job and now I enjoy my job because I know what I'm supposed to do for the position.

Look Jamie, if you loved school then you did not have dyslexia.
most Dyslexic people don't become Richard Fucking Branson, or a millionaire celeb chef? most wind up in prison, or ware their joints away in a hard labour mundane factory job on minimum wage, or worse, can't fill in a job application form so are exploited, have to work illegally in the back of a kitchen for cash in hand because the boss doesn't want to pay your tax and insurance, so you end up with no pension credits paid, so you go back to wearing your joints and lungs away in a hellish factory, because at least they pay your tax, but shifting 250 tones by hand over 12hrs in 30kg blocks 5-7 days a week destroys you physically, almost as fast as it destroys you mentally,
who is your ''Book'' aimed at anyway? because Dyslexic folk cant/wont read it? and anyone that is not dyslexic is going to get your glittery bullshit nonsense view of what it really means to have Dyslexia? you are not helping by telling everyone that doesn't have dyslexia that having Dyslexia is a wonderful thing? because its not, your life is wonderful because you are a millionaire celeb in a bubble, Having Dyslexia in reality is a fucking nightmare, just go ask all the folk in prison, or look at the suicide stats that show that Dyslexic people are way more likely to kill them selves. You are not inspiring or helping, If you think you are then you are a fucking moron!, I think you are just exploiting another big issue to sell a book, and that is morally bereft, so fucking disrespectful to all the people hurting and struggling and failing their whole life.

You are right that nobody should be put in a 'special room.' As a teacher in Canada, I'm hoping that we are working hard to meet the needs of the many different kinds of learners that we have. I hope we are not 'rigid.' I hope that we are also able to feed our students well, because right now we are not. And that is part of the way to reaching our students. Keep up the good fight, Jamie!

Thankyou Jamie Oliver for speaking about Dyslexia and how it impacted your education. In Boulder CO USA it seems like we are behind the times, and still dealing with similar educational issues that you encountered in your own education a decade or so ago. Glad to hear your nephews are in a different educational culture, we assume that's in UK. Would you consider speaking out more and become more involved in issues around education for these kids in the same way you have done for school lunches? Boulder Vally Kid Identified with Dyslexia BVKID is looking to make changes in education that better supports our kids and improves their educational outcomes. BVKID.org or BVKID advocacy on FB - we need a celebrity speaker in October 2017 for a Dyslexia Awareness event- contact us if you know of anyone who can help!
