Thanks for this tip. I definitely turn to slow down maybe that is my issue. My biggest struggle is with right turns - my right foot drags and the back of the ski doesn’t turn forcing me to lift it up each time which is a terrible habit. Any ideas how to practice getting the back of the right ski to flow with my turn?

I hear what your saying.. I just bought a wide pair of skis with a short turning radius mainly so i can ski over crud and around people. I love long turns but that doesn't seam to work well when there are a ton of people. Especially when there are a lot of children on the slopes..

That was the What without the How! HOW DO I SLOW DOWN OR STOP????? That is probably the number one question a skier has. Other than, where can I get a cheaper lift ticket? The tongue of your boot and rotating your knees into the slope are the brake pedals in skiing. Pressing your knees forward so your upper body is hanging over the tips of your skis, takes weight off the tails and puts it on the tips. The steering part of your skis. More weight on the tips, more ski tip bending. Rotating your knees into the turn or hill increases your leg angle which puts your skis more on edge so they can bend even more. The more a ski is bent, the tighter the radius of the turn, the slower you go.

As you start a turn by facing and leaning your upper body down the hill as you get off your downhill foot, press your knees into the tongue of your boot and press your hip in the direction of the turn. The more you do that, the tighter the turn. If you want to go faster, just rise up. Yep! Skiing really is that simple.

Visualize this.
The "Stick" in an airplane is what makes the plane turn right and left.
The rudder pedals also help with turning.
The rudder pedals also double as the brake pedals.
The stick is your legs.
Your hand at the top of the stick is your hips.
When you want your skis to turn right, you get off the right rudder pedal as you move your hips to the right.
When you want your skis to turn left, you get off the left rudder pedal and move your hips to the left.
Hips to the right, get off your right foot. Hips to the left, get off your left foot.
Always have you chest facing the panel/dash before you start a turn.

To control your speed during a turn, press your hips farther into the turn and press your shins into the tongue of your boots which is where the braking part of the rudder pedal is. At the top.
Stand up and practice this at home. Memorize these movements because they are what your skis need you to do to allow them to turn as designed. Those are the movements you need from beginner to racer. The more you progress, the more you exaggerate those same moves.

I am sorry to tell you that you are wrong! Try to understand the situation of a beginner skier. This skier wants support by his skis and he feels that it is necessary to pivot the skis quickly in order to get them under the body. The slower he pivots his skis, the less is the chance to get the support by his skis.
So if you are to make a parallel turn, the secret is called body projection that must happen before the pivoting of the skis. Only by a good body projection into the fall-line are you able to pivot slowly your skis so that they can support your body.

Thanks, for trying that is. 'Slow down to turn' is misleading. I prefer to emphasize the top half of the turn. Boot tongue pressure and drifting the top of the turn slows down the turn, by the time you get to the tips pointing down the fall line and the bottom half of the turn you're already slow from properly executing the first half. This will allow you to relax and let the skis complete the turn without any need to control momentum thus facilitating an immediate release and initiation of the next turn.

What to do, not how to do it. Typical! Nobody knows how to TEACH skiing! "How to control your speed." Would you skiers like to know the answer that he was incapable of giving? This is your lucky day. When you are making connected GS turns down the hill, you have to remember that the steering wheel and brake pedal are on your inside hip. The hip of your unweighted foot. When you get off your downhill foot to start the next turn, the more you push your hip into the turn and your upper body (from your kneecaps up) down the hill, the steeper your leg angle, the more your ski is on the inside edge, the more the ski can bend, the sharper they will turn. You regulate your speed by the amount you move your hip into the turn and your knees and upper body forward and down the hill.
