Architecture, whether in film or in books, is often romanticized as a very personal pursuit. The image of an architect sketching with pen on paper remains the strongest in the public mind. This festival seeks to dispel this image and to show the public that the architecture community is a vibrant and vigorous, sometimes rancorous one. That it is a social unit that allows for the sharing of amazing ideas and numerous collaborations.
This third annual Anthology Festival once again seeks to act as a platform for such endeavors. The festival brings together one of the largest gatherings of architectural talent in the region and serves to connect us with each other and build bonds through a communal celebratory experience. The festival is about showing how architecture not only builds to leave legacies behind but also fosters critical and experiential journeys.
Architecture becomes a social experience when the community comes together and to create a coherent stream of ideas that serves to define our time. It is when these ideas can grow together and intertwine the development of architecture with society that they then can create a lasting change for all our futures.
The last decade has been one of immense change and development in the region. The Philippines, in particular, has been experiencing a huge increase in new construction. It is in this day and age, when people start to realize that their surroundings are changing that they become aware about architecture. Architecture is such a huge part of our urban environment, yet most people have very little awareness of it.
The idea that one’s physical environment is beyond one’s control should be anathema to those who build our cities. Architecture fails when the discourse revolves around architects and our buildings. It requires an exchange with society and become a vocal part of our urban ecosystems.
Social architecture is about engaging society at large and giving open access to all. This festival seeks to reveal and pronounce what architecture can be -that architecture belongs to all of us, and every person should be empowered to imagine a better place.
