I feel like wresting is the most important because generally the person with the better wresting determines where the fight takes place and helps you control and incompasitate a person on the ground

It's no so much what's best, it's who's using it and how tough are they. Just because you train 2-3 times a week does not necessarily make you a bad ass.

Most people don 't know any martial arts so I would sau the most effectif martial art against a street fighter is Muay Thai. You never wanna go the ground on the streets.

UFC came out of the US Army rangers from a fellow by the name Matt Larson who had a background in Asian martial arts and took the best from all his experience and put together a system that was used by the rangers. He was the primary instructor at Ranger school in hand to hand combat.

Grappling is very effective however if you’re on the ground alone and the opponent has buddies want to kick the shit out of you while your trying to get a submission.

The one thing I would say is that I think Jocko, is probably harder to knock out than 99.9% Of the bar room drunks one might encounter. So I think his lived experience is probably a bit different than most of ours. 😂Other than that I totally agree

Always seems to be confusion between 'fighting' and 'sport'. In a 'fight' there are NO RULES! You're likely to get your balls kicked, knee smashed or eye gouged - NOT ALLOWED in 'sport'! I've seen grapplers/grabbers stopped in their tracks with just a 'knee check' or eye flick many times. Anytime you are close enough to 'grab' someone you can be reached too. I prefer a 1911 to any technique but in a 'real in the street fight' it doesn't matter how the outcome is achieved. What - the bad guy is going to tell the police you kicked him in the nuts or poked him in the eye?

Anything in the street is too dangerous, 1st choice should be to avoid, run! However that’s not always a choice, sometimes you have to defend yourself or loved ones. In that case the ground honestly is the last place I want to take the fight unless you know for sure nobody else is going to jump in. BJJ is great for one on one but fails at multiple attackers. Yeah yeah I know 90% of fights end up on the ground, I believe that is a police office stat but let’s go with it. I would argue that the majority if not 100% of fights start standing up. Know how to deal with the worst case (ground) but know just as much how to deal with preventative or mitigation (stand up) to avoid a worse position. I’m not saying don’t practice or know grappling, absolutely you should. I am saying that street fights are too dangerous to default to the ground. I’m always going to fight to stay up, you never know about multiple attackers, weapons, etc. I’d personally rather be on my feet as long as possible. Obviously this is just my opinion and I’d love to hear other arguments as well, love to learn more.

The problem is that most morons think that in the street you will be fighting a grappler, NO my friend. On the street if you go to the ground you will get kicked in the head by 10 jiggers, they will split your head open. In all honesty, practice sprinting, get your cardio game up, get your boxing game up. You want to hit a couple and get away.

The best martial art for street fighting is to be as physically fit, strong, and athletic as possible. That alone will get you through 95% of one-on-one attacks. All other martial arts are useless in a real, chaotic street fight where anything goes. The odds of being assaulted by a trained fighter are so extremely low as to be almost non-existent. Simply DO NOT get into mutual combat with another adult male outside of a gym ring. If you do then you deserve whatever happens to you. If you're ever attacked by a lone male he'll almost always be intoxicated, delusional, desperate, or all of the above. An untrained yet very fit, strong, athletic athlete with great balance and endurance will almost always prevail over an attacker who has some fight training but is out of shape, weaker, and less coordinated. I grew up in San Diego and we learned very quickly to never challenge a brand-new Marine fresh out of USMC boot camp or SEAL right out of BUD/S. You'd be better off fighting a retired MMA guy.

for me it's boxing and judo/bjj... you can pick either judo or bjj. Personally I'd give the edge to judo on the streets because if you can get one of those throws in on concrete it's going to increase your chances of winning or surviving 110% a good judoka vs a guy tht doesnt know how to fall... is gonna have a really bad landing that will either finish the fight or leave him broken with you able to submit or choke him out easily

Quite a few muay Thai fighters have pulled it off. They just need to land a few leg kicks to slow the grappler down so they can't shoot fast, and you've got a lot better chance. I think muay Thai has the most untapped, raw potential of any martial art right now. They don't do mma because it's seen as a dirty sport to them. Muay Thai has a very deep culture and tradition. But, at the end of the day, I'm still with Jocko. You should at least know the basic of grappling. Once the Thai fighters learn to stuff a few takedowns, it's going to be interesting for awhile.

I dont disagree, but the early UFCs also did not have the best reps from other other arts other than BJJ (I know Royce wasn't the best BJJ at the time but was close for sure). Also, the fighters knew nothing of BJJ but Royce did know something of the other arts. However, train in as many arts you can, stay open minded, and do what you are passionate about.

There is no "supreme" "art" in any situation in real general life. Situations change change everything! Do what ever it takes if you are in a street fight. Combine everything you know!!!! Do what fits best at the moment! Know as much as you can and apply it where it is most fit at the time.

I’ve trained and in different martial arts and self defense arts for 30 years, and really, the best “style” of martial art is the one that works for you as an individual. I ask people when they say I want to learn martial arts, “what are you wanting to get out of it?”. The beauty of martial arts as a whole is that there’s so many available that can tailor to your specific genetics, body type, personal goals, etc. Personally, I am a big guy and found out, the hard way, that it meant nothing against a BJJ on the ground because I have ZERO ground skills. In the same instance, that BJJ guy wound up in a casket when I bought out a training pocket knife because I have trained in Filipino Kali/Escrima/Arnis for 20 of those 30 years and he froze at the sight of a weapon. It’s a common debate that will always be debated

Randy Couture was a wrestler, don't throw him in bjj just to prove your point. and early ufc days were different because those folks were not familiar with jiu jitsu. was mostly down hill for them once the wrestler figured them out. so don't paint this picture of bjj being this unstoppable force.

theres a christian run MMA gym with free classes each week. they have bjj, boxing, and wrestling experts that come in on different days and teach.
keeping in mind this is free, would these MMA classes help me against a bjj expert?
or should I pay money and start pure bjj classes?
