Here at Drink Eat Travel Repeat, we love to travel – NYC is one of our favourite places to go – and is hands down Oliver’s favourite place in the world. We’ve been fortunate enough to travel to NYC into double figures now. Whether that be for Christmas, new year, easter, summer, fall, Halloween, etc. So there are many different types of blogs we could do for NYC – and we will do many in the future – but with this one – for the first Blog we thought we should write one for the first-timer, so you can maximise your visit and get the most out of your stay.

First things first, like with any major city it doesn’t hurt to do a bit of your own research first. Especially with things like taxis, getting to and from places quickly, subways, and a good bit of time management. Many people come to NYC for the first time for anywhere between 3-7 nights – which isn’t a great deal of time – so writing an itinerary to pack in as much as you can is always a good idea, and then also maximising your time in certain areas will make sure you see as much as you can in the time you have.
New York City is actually split into boroughs, Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, The Bronx, and Staten Island, the most popular being Manhattan, this is the one you will of seen in the films on your TV’s many times over. Each of the 5 boroughs has its own unique style and they are all great in their own ways – however, on this blog, we will focus on Manhattan.

Now Manhattan is split into different sections – starting at the top and working down from North to South you have the upper east and west side – this is what splits Central Park, you then have midtown east and west, this is where Times Square, Grand Central Station and The Empire State Building are. Past this you then have the areas of Chelsea, Murray Hill, & Gramercy Park, here you will find everything from The Vessel, Madison Square Garden, Walking The High Line, or visit Gramercy Park itself. After this you have Greenwich Village and the East Village, Greenwich has some lovely streets with old fashioned buildings away from the hustle and bustle of the touristy areas, here you will find the apartment off the tv show Friends as well as the tree-lined streets full of bars and cafes and in the heart of the centre, you can sit in Washington Square Park. The East Village is known for its brilliant nightlife, old school bars (Our favourite bar McSorley’s Old Ale House is here) music venues, vintage shops, and tattoo studios. After this, you have the areas of Soho and Tribeca to the South West of Manhattan and Little Italy, Chinatown, and the Lower East Side to the South East of Manhattan. Soho and the Tribeca area have some of the most upmarket restaurants and bars in Manhattan – some of NYC’s best and highly rated food comes from Restaurants in this area. Little Italy, Chinatown and the Lower East Side have so many great sites to see, walk through the heart of Little Italy and it feels like your on a street in Naples, and then watch it merge into Chinatown and you feel like your in Beijing. A great mix of Vibrant colours and cultures here. The Lower Eastside has many boutiques, stylish bars, cafes, and art galleries and of course Is home to the famous Katz’s Deli. Then at the very South of Manhattan, you have Battery Park City, which is home to Wall Street, the Charging Bull, Ground Zero (where the twin towers used to stand), and of course the new world trade centre. This is also where you can get the ferry to Ellis Island, and Liberty Island to see the Statue of Liberty. See why we say to have an Itinerary right?
