I Am a Poor Wayfaring Stranger - acapella with lyrics

Poor Wayfaring Stranger apparently had its origin in the traditions of shape-note hymnals, sings, and singing schools. Since musical instruments were scarce in early American life, the concept of geometrically shaped musical notes representing relative pitches instead of round notes representing definite pitches was introduced in New England in the 1700s, primarily for church singing. It soon spread to the Southern states as a teaching method that encouraged singing in harmony.

The Wayfaring Stranger, also known as Poor Wayfaring Stranger, is a well-known spiritual/folk song about a plaintive soul on the journey through life. The journey the singer speaks of is the trials and tribulations of life. Home is the final reward of reuniting with loved ones in Heaven in the afterlife.
