Our van is a VW Crafter Long Wheel Base LWB 4 Motion (4x4/AWD) Van.

In this video, I take you through the process of building a custom kitchen unit for our dream camper van. My goal is to determine if it's cheaper and more practical to build our own rather than buying a pre-made unit, with the added benefit of keeping it lightweight and tailored to our needs. Alongside Ginny, Skye the dog, "little man," we’re building the ultimate adventure van to travel the world, and this is a major step in that process.

We chose to construct the unit using lightweight camper van plywood in an Arctic blue colour, which has a nice blue-grey finish. Throughout the build, I tackle various challenges, from cutting the panels to fit around the wheel arches to adding supports and trimming for a clean look. The kitchen layout is completely custom, designed to fit the specific dimensions and requirements of our van. I experimented with removing unnecessary material to save weight and provide ventilation for the fridge.

Along the way, I encountered some frustrating moments, like drilling pocket holes too deep and having to adjust certain fittings multiple times. Despite the challenges, I methodically templated parts of the kitchen to avoid wasting expensive materials. I also made adjustments for things like sink placement and airflow by cutting custom vent holes.

One of the biggest hurdles was installing a small cupboard, which took much longer than anticipated due to its tight fit and the need to align hinges and shelving. I spent time carefully trimming edges and finishing panels to ensure everything aligned properly and looked neat.

At this point in the build, the kitchen units are mostly in place, but there’s still more to do, including finishing the countertop and adding a bench seat with storage. In total, we’ve spent about £450 on materials so far, primarily on lightweight plywood and various fittings. However, building the kitchen ourselves is proving to be time-consuming, though still cheaper than buying a pre-made one, which can range from £1,000 to £2,000.
