TRANSCRIPT:
Hi, I’m Mike Dunfee. I’m with the Mike Dunfee Group. We do real estate sales, leasing, and property management. I’ve been doing this in Long Beach since 1995-96. I graduated Cal. State Long Beach in 1989 and I’ve been here ever since. It’s just had that gravitational pull that I just can’t explain. I mean, the weather, the beach, there’s you know - it’s close enough to the city but still kind of small enough to where you feel like it’s home. I like Long Beach. It’s a rule, I’m up with/before the sun. I’ll go for a run or a swim in the Belmont Pool (not during the COVID-19 thing). 2020 was looking like a very good sales year for us. You hear a little bit - it’s kind of like the C-Story or D-Story out behind the election. We only had maybe a couple weeks before it was like, oh - this is not just something that’s important for other people but this is something that’s important that will dramatically affect what we do and if we don’t do something soon to be more prepared we’re gonna be in trouble. I pay people a salary here so I have that responsibility. A couple transactions people just kind of stopped on the sales side of it. There were rules coming out about what could go on with you know, evictions not taking place, and all that. Remember, we collect rent for close to five hundred units so how the tenants are processing that information, how the owners of those properties are processing that information - we were pleasantly surprised at how strong the rents we received in April were. The tenants were very conscientious about “Oh no, we want to make sure we pay - we only want to make sure things are handled - we want to do the right thing.” It was nice to see, it really - you know that but still, when they’re you know - everybody’s making decisions about who gets paid and who doesn’t and everybody has that anxiety of what does three months and six months and a year from now look like. Life is still having to go on and we’re spending more time at home now. That’s the shelter, that’s you know, has bearing on everything from where their kids go to school to which sports teams they root for to what they identify with to where they park their car, the fridge they open up their beer/get their glass of milk or whatever - all that takes place at the place they’ve either bought or are renting and it’s their home. What we do matters - it matters to the tenants, the owners, buyers, sellers, and all the other people out there. I feel like, maybe we are essential - that we’re doing something that matters in good times and in bad. Our revenue cut in half - yeah, at least… maybe more - for some months and payroll didn’t! So that’s the real key now - making sure I can keep people busy and not go broke doing so. I had to make a choice. Am I trying to keep people working, keep the team together, keep building moving forward, or do I just economically shelter in place? “Hey let’s not spend any money. Let’s let everybody go. They can get their unemployment and do whatever. Love you guys but I gotta take care of me and my family and we’re just gonna hold on tight and not invest in the business.” It’s just not my personality. At the end of the day, I mean I’m writing checks with the belief that we’ll get through this, and again it came to the first of the month and we were like, “Cool, people are paying their rent.” To see that take place, it gives me a little feeling of purpose and a sense of hope so I am very very very optimistic about where Long Beach is going to be pandemic or not, I think we’re in a good place. Mikedunfeegroup.com Whether you’re looking to buy, sell, or have a place that needs management - they need someone to take care of the property here, we’re totally plugged in. We have a bunch of great systems and great people that help take care of the properties that need to be ready. And then of course tenants too - they seem to find us as soon as we put a place up for advertisement as well. Be kind to each other and let’s appreciate each other throughout all this COVID-19 and take a minute to be with the people you love and you care about and maybe the people you don’t know hiding behind that mask, give them smiles and goodwills because they’re contagious too. Be kind.
