I have a HP 8300 Elite SFF with a hole cut in the side panel with a PCIE cable coming out the side hooked to a 1050 TI

personally, i daily drive a system that has almost the exact same specs. I have a gtx 960 in my system paired with an i5 4460. still a very usable system in 2023

My school uses Optiplex PC's and they SUCK

I have 9020 tower with i7, 250 ssd, msi aero 960 single-fan card and stock 290w 80 plus gold psu. I think the author is using the wrong 960 card. Dedicated as retro gaming console but also plays fortnite and all newer games we've tried with ease. Some newer games have to be set at low graphics resolution, but its still 1080p. Beautiful. Does not run hot. Trouble free. All for under $150.

If you just buy a barebone dell optiplex for about 35$ usd and get all the parts for about50$ usd you can save alot of money and get better parts.

I prefer the 9020 with 4 USB plugs on the front. Still cheap, but lots more to offer for gamers.

Do this again for 2023 they got optiplexez with 6 core cpus now and you should do the whole recommended upgrade process for as cheap as possible ie the motherboard adapter if needed just show a more long term solution

The REAL b*stard thing about these Optiplex's is removing the drive cage so you can put in a longer video card. You have a LOT of rivets to drill through.

When i did my research, the optiplex was only rated for 8gb ram. Is this the case with yours? Did it just accept 16gb?
I'm running a 750ti and in fairness it does what I need on a standard clock.

optiplex 9020 stock cooler working fine for gen 4 84W TDP, is it universal to XPS? maybe it could also handle XPS gen 10 65W TDP, downgrade parts w/upgrade performance lol

I had a 9020 with a GTX 1060 3GB and an i7 4770, honestly I was in love with it until my FPS kept dropping in newer games, even though I upgraded the ram and switched the processor to a 4790k.

I just got into this whole upgrading Optiplex thing recently and have done a 3050, 9010, 3010 and a 790 all of them get good framerate with the paired cards I sourced. These will make great first time gamer pc's for some almost teens out there. I have a trick on the 3010 and 9010 series to keep the latch system, you just need to notch the rear of the plastic catch so the PSU will slip through and it will still latch the side cover closed.

Everybody seems to bitch about the lack of cores!! but I've never had any issue with any performance yet!! I play all kinds of games from Skyrim, Diablo II, Sunkenland, All the FarCry series even FC6 on Medium. I always average about 42 to 58fps on my 1080p monitor, and i7 4790 cpu, with GTX 1650 Super, 32Gb DDR3, 1TB SSD

These days, I will recycle pre-builts like that for people that simply don't need much, like my mom. she just wants a internet box that can play the occasional video.

I’m launching a gaming PC brand with my friend where we build these old ootiolexes into custom gaming PCs. What makes ours different tho is that we’re replacing the front panels with custom ones we made and putting 8gb RX570s in them and they’ll only be 300$

I would use amd rx 6400 low profile with 4gb instead of that Nvidia and you could get much better performance

nowadays you can get an i5-8500 and a GTX 1070 ti for around this price, or even a 1080 if your budget is 300$. i know cuz i am in the process of building mine

In Egypt - 2024, you can pick the i7 4790 with 16 gigs of ram for around 140 and the rx580 for around 120, which is awesome but not that much.

Paid 125$ USD and used leftovers. It has a 1650 Super, 500-watt power supply. As for gaming I rarely use it but suffering the net has no problems.

Dawid mentioned the 24 pin to 8 pin psu adapters available, but also keep in mind, win11 can be installed easily using rufus.

just bought optiplax 7020 16 gigs of ram i7 4790 and threw in it a gtx 750 1gb modal (it was advertized as 2 gigs of vram) and i get 140 fps in a mis of normal and high setting in gta 5 70 fps ark again a mix of low and mediem and ya i am happy with it
btw total was 120 dollars also pc came with monitar a w2027a

It always baffles me how much things cost in America.
In Finland you can get an RX 580 for 40€ and a 4th gen i7 for another 40€.
On top of that you can get a used GTX 1660 and R5 2600 PC for 300 - 400€

I can buy that original cooler at my local store for $15. It sadly sits on the bottom shelf below the more pricy air coolers.

2 years later i would say the amd radeon HD7670 4gb is the BEST budget gpu. at around 60$ on amazon

3 years later and this is still relevant. I am watching this on a Optiplex I got from Ebay for $38 shipped. Has an i7 3770. Slapped in 16gb a ssd and a RX 480 $35 Ebay find and a 500w Bronze power supply I had laying around. So far it's not a bad beater. Best part was that it had standard ps connectors on the mobo.

For those of you thinking about going a route like this, using Sata to 8 Pin power adapters for the graphics card is a dodgy long term solution. Even with a lowish TDP card like the GTX 960. You can get a 24pin to 8 Pin adapter for the motherboard, so you can upgrade the powersupply.
