Western chattel slavery made the industrial revolution and the renaissance possible:

The Caribbean island populations finally stopped paying tribute because they had disappeared: they were totally exterminated in the gold mines, in the deadly task of sifting auriferous sands with their bodies half submerged in water, or in breaking up the ground beyond the point of exhaustion, doubled up over the heavy cultivating tools brought from Spain. Many natives of Haiti anticipated the fate imposed by their white oppressors: they killed their children and committed mass suicide. The mid-sixteenth-century historian Fernández de Oviedo interpreted the Antillean holocaust thus: “Many of them, by way of diversion, took poison rather than work, and others hanged themselves with their own hands.” (His interpretation founded a school I am amazed to read, in the latest (1970) book by the French technician René Dumont, Cuba: Is It Socialist? “The Indians were not totally exterminated. Their genes subsist in Cuban chromosomes. They felt such an aversion for the tension which continuous work demands that some killed themselves rather than accept forced labor..”)

...

Between 1545 and 1558 the prolific silver mines of Potosi, in what is now Bolivia, and of Zacatecas and Guanajuato in Mexico, were discovered, and the mercury amalgam process, which made possible the exploitation of the lowestgrade silver, began to be used. The “silver rush” quickly eclipsed gold mining. In the mid-seventeenth century silver constituted more than 99 percent of mineral exports from Spanish America. Latin America was a huge mine, with Potosi as its chief center. Some excessively enthusiastic Bolivian writers insist that in three centuries Spain got enough metal from Potosi to make a silver bridge from the tip of the Cerro to the door of the royal palace across the ocean... The large-scale clandestine export of Latin American silver as contraband to the Philippines, to China, and to Spain itself is not taken into account by Earl Hamilton, who nevertheless cites, in his well-known work on the subject, astounding figures based on data from the Casa de Contratación in Seville.11 Between 1503 and 1660, 185,000 kilograms of gold and 16,000,000 of silver arrived at the Spanish port of Sanlukar de Barrameda, Silver shipped to Spain in little more than a century and a half exceeded three times the total European reserves— and it must be remembered that these official figures are not complete. The metals taken from the new colonial dominions not only stimulated Europe’s economic development; one may say that they made it possible.

Galeano, Eduardo, "The Open Veins of Latin America, (Siglo XXI Editores, Mexico, 1971), pp. 15, 22-23.

The new men are not so new after all. Crude slavery paid the bill for the tepid renaissance.

A wonderful account of the "Renaissance." Many events and accomplishments were mentioned. I hope most of it was accurate. For some reason there seem to be a concerted effort to discredit the Arabs and their invention of the numeral system based on 10 that the whole world is using. For the same bizarre reason there seem to be a concerted effort to credit the Hindu Indian civilization for creating the modern numeral system. Overall, DW Documentary have many excellent programs on human achievements.

St Peter's Basilica isn't a cathedral: that would be St. John Lateran in Rome. The "t" in "Apostles" is silent. And that was within the first 15 seconds...

After watching this documentary, my passion for this field has been rekindled. Even though I missed the opportunity to become an architect, my love for the profession remains as strong as ever. The documentary reminded me of the intricate blend of creativity and practicality that architecture embodies. The way architects shape our surroundings and create spaces that evoke emotions is truly captivating. While I may not be designing buildings myself, my admiration for the artistry and vision of architects continues to thrive.

Amazing work.
The issue arises when you proclaim big terminologies like history of MANKIND And era that changed the world

Sorry NO. This art and documentary is only about the history of small European countries and their development after SELF Destruction of dark ages.

This does not define history of mankind or the world.
Europe is just a tiny part of an entire globe.
At the same time, the same Europeans were busy looting and destroying civilisations in the Americas so please acknowledge that along.
And eventually they did worse things 🙂

Parts of the drain system in Rome built more than 2000 years ago is still in use today realtivaly unrepaired. We don't know how to make water resistant concrete today like they did 2000+ years ago, no matter what modern science says.

If a modern bridge survives 200 years we are lucky; time will tell.

The Renaissance: A Glorious Era of Rebirth and Enlightenment

Cultural Awakening: The Renaissance was a transformative period in European history, marked by a renewed interest in art, literature, science, and humanism after the Dark Ages.

Revival of Classical Ideas: Inspired by the wisdom of ancient Greece and Rome, Renaissance thinkers sought to revive classical knowledge and embrace the ideals of reason, logic, and individualism.

Artistic Revolution: The Renaissance witnessed a flourishing of artistic creativity, with artists like Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo, and Raphael producing masterpieces that showcased technical brilliance, emotional depth, and a celebration of human beauty.

Humanism Takes Center Stage: Humanism, a philosophical movement emphasizing the importance of human potential and achievements, became a guiding principle of the Renaissance. Humanists celebrated individualism, education, and the pursuit of knowledge.

Scientific Inquiry: The Renaissance saw significant advancements in science and exploration. Visionaries like Copernicus, Galileo, and Vesalius challenged long-held beliefs, leading to groundbreaking discoveries that reshaped our understanding of the natural world.

The part about the Turks and the Ottoman Empire is so unbelievably reductionist and patently untrue.

DW love giving Europe a pat on the back, even though for a significant amount of time- Europe was a backwater compared to the Ottoman Empire, especially in the timeline you describe.

Art historian here. This is a bad documentary. Dark ages? This is an obsolete term. It holds no truth to begin with. If you perceive the Middle Ages as 'dark ages', you are either an old academic active in 70s or you just want to tell stories. With all the resources you people have, why don't you just make a good, realistic series on Renaissance that could provide people a genuine historical perspective beyond a simple high school level of glorification of the probably the most important 'movement' - not period - of all times in human history? Michelangelo is not a scientist, he is not even an 'artist' because there is no such thing as concept of art at the time. Same goes for Leonardo, but he IS an engineer. Almost all his art works are 'experiments' in some way, he doesn't care. Fuck postmodernism. Stop insulting the audience!
