i wonder if there is a connection between the formation of lifeforms near hydrothermal vents and supercritical fluids formed at such high heat and pressure

Does this scientists every engage the ontological "why" question or does he side-step those questions with giving "how" answers? I suspect the later.

Minute 11 Nick asks the obvious question, "how did ATP Synthase arise?". "The ATP synthase is why biochemists hate to ask the question WHY? No answer

Although he is probably right that the woman should have shared the Nobel Prize or got a special prize, it is clear that Warburg, Krebs and Mitchel were brilliant, strong, cantankerous men who could stand up to opposition from lesser scientists, university admin and push our knowledge into areas unwanted or not understood by lesser scientists. Unfortunately these men would be cancelled in Universities now the first time they made an off comment.

Fractal Math logic represents life system energy structured pathways so well. And he is only speaking of I'd say ACTIVE aware consciousness in biological organisms, otherwise I posit all of the molecules and atoms were passive conscious by interacting with the environment based on laws of physics and chemistry and it's just gauging at what level thru the whole evolution into the highest level controlling themselves outside of direct DNA RNA coding and rules and becoming what we define as life living. I say why the logic of what makes you feel good to interpret and investigate why what how? Why does this guy DECIDE consciousness is ONLY feelings and active responding. That definition should be biological consciousness built from non biological physics chemical organizations and particles in aggregate. The snide little "Oh everything is conscious doesn't make him feel good" is not scientific curiosity or inspired. Requiring O2 ONLY, definitely doesn't explain 'nothing' becoming something aware aggregate molecular systems flows called cells being aware of environments when not all of first cells were 'forward KREBs' but reverse. I just see it as othering choose justification to say something has no worth beyond resource unless it's our definition of consciousness.

One can explain domino's to the horizon but beyond that, there must be a primordial push/pull that started the process. What is the origin of Electro-Magnetism? Until we know that, the mystery of why life exists as we observe it, will remain a mystery.

This thing about how a minute voltage in milliamps is as strong a lightning if you are down at that scale: I heard an amazing thing the other day about the amount of energy generated by a cubic meter of fusion at the heart of the sun. Turns out it is less than that generated by a cubic metre of compost heap in your back garden. The point, of course, is that the sun has quite a LOT of cubic metres.

Physicist here needs a little bit of clarification. Nick Lane always talks about H+ ions. But those are naked protons and the most reactive entities in chemistry. I assume this is just a shorthand convenience for what I recall are called a hydroxonium ions, H3O+. Can anyone offer any more insights? Naked protons maybe be acceptable in the sun, but in living tissue?!?!

This is mind blowing stuff. I absolutely love the way in which the lecture is organised. It starts subtle, touching simple concepts and then as it progresses, adding bit and bit to help paint the whole picture, adding personal anecdotes and history was just cherry on top. A rich lecture that was thrilling, well biologically, and i was completely hooked throughout the entirety of the video.
Absolutely amazing stuff.

Excellent, excellent lecture. Wow, thanks!

I wish Nick Lane would stress a little more that oxygen double bond is the primary source of energy in the aerobic metabolism, accounting for 98% of harvested energy. He says "burning hydrogen in oxygen" in the lecture. But that's not enough. There's a common misconception, even among biologists and doctors, that energy comes from carbohydrates, fats, etc. But these molecules are ultimately only the substrates for the ultimate goal of burning hydrogen in oxygen, and extracting energy from that double bond of oxygen.
