The DEI in this movie is beyond staggering. I’m actually surprised they didn’t put a chimpanzee in a speaking role or maybe portray the ChiComs as owners of Mars.

This picture is one of the best (i.e. worst) examples of woke that’s out there with A-list cast.

Were anything like the premise for this movie to happen today, I have my doubts about a rescue being attempted. Too many bureaucrats would lose face. I expect they'd stay silent and leave him for dead and hope like hell nobody would leak.

Like most movies developed from a book, the book is much better but it was a good movie. The whole music thing doesn't make any sense. You have 6 people that have all their personal belongings in the hab including a laptop for each and probably some other types of digital storage. They probably would send every movie and song known to man on this trip because what artist wouldn't want their creation experienced on Mars and digital storage weighs almost nothing even in 2024.. We are supposed to believe that the only music he could find is one disco artist? They needed to find a way to destroy most of the computing equipment to make this believable. Details matter when you are making a science based movie.

God I hate the cuts. Incredible movie, incredible it was made at all, miserable awful tiktok "cut once a second to get reaction shots from everyone in the scene" editing.

The film wasn’t woke enough and didn’t show enough racial and gender diversity in the roles. Right? I mean. My green haired professor said so, so like…yea.

If they tell it to the press, how do they think to hide it from the Ares crew, that has access to all news source in the net plus personal message exchanged with families and friends?
The crew would know it after the press release and would be very rightfully pissed off by NASA, which would immediately destroy their trustful working relationship.

I think this is a huge logic plothole in the story.
So they should inform the crew at once.

The night scene on Mars shows a beacon flashing in through the window. That is a waste of power, but Watney left it on.
Can the NASA orbital cameras not see the beacon? Would they think it was running on automatic, despite dusty solar panels and exceeding mission life?

Watney could have redone it as a communicator, sending out Morse code.

The best scene in the movie was just before this one - when the lowly night tech, viewing the screen, realizes what she is seeing. Again, a lowly night tech saves the day!

A cruel call but the right call, given what they knew at that point. The crew in Ares was 10 months away from the nearest source of therapy - and he was right that they'd react poorly, given that they later mutiny in order to force Hermes into a slingshot trajectory, becoming the second mutiny in NASA history.

Matt Damon is a great actor but, for the love of God, we need to keep his unlucky ass here on Earth. Consider the Billions spent rescuing him from the other end of a wormhole (Interstellar) and from Mars (The Martian). Matt, stay home. You're getting to be expensive. :-)

This film is a good theoretical exercise and proves what a stupid idea it is, to think of sending humans to Mars as a way of solving the problems we have here! How many trips would it take to establish a self-sustainging colony? Total budget: $trillions!! Likely outcome of them deciding to return to 'save' one person: all dead!!

The casting decisions in this movie were pretty puzzling. Mindy Park is clearly Asian, why cast McKenzie Davis? Stick friggin' Awkwafina in that role or someone unknown. And with respect to Chiwitel, the role of Vincent Kapoor was almost clearly written for Irrfan Khan.
