The fact later he would be stuck in CGI alone in many shots is heartbreaking, cause there couldve been so many cute and funny moments like this

By the dialogue it feels like this scene is one of the last ones shot for the first movie since Sean Astin (Samwise Gamgee) says "there's nothing but specials effects in this movie and I just wanted to be a part of it." So he'd seen the inproduction footage to some point during filming prior to this scene. Also if it is close to the end of filming then it would make sense for the actors and production crew to be little on edge/at their wits end so that when two actors spontaneously come up with such a funny gag it would get the big laughter you hear from the crew behind the camera.
