A republic is a form of government rooted in the principle of popular sovereignty, with the power of government residing with the people.

Republics are representative democracies, where citizens elect individuals to make decisions and create laws on their behalf, making sure that all citizens are subject to the rule of law.

Ancient Rome was the most enduring republic (509 - 27 BCE) until Octavian became Emperor, ending its nearly 500-year run. Modern republics provide legal equality among citizens, civil rights and liberties while establishing a constitutional framework for the government to operate.

The United States Constitution (1788) features a separation of powers, dividing authority between the judicial, legislative and executive branches to ensure that no single branch can dominate the other.
