Cry of Hope: Tagu Jams Live Recording Session

As monsoon rain falls across Myanmar, it's hard not to feel sentimental and nostalgic from time to time. Maybe rain reminds us of tears that we've cried; wounds that need healing. Whatever the reason, I think it's the mood that fits the music of the new pop/rock band Cry of Hope who joins us for the ninth episode of Tagu Jams live recording session.

The band's lead singers Phoebe and David met while they were studying at Myanmar Institute of Theology. Phoebe was a Music major and David studied Social Studies. (NOTE: Phoebe has her own YouTube channel - @phoebephoenix9162 - where she explores music theory, songwriting and music analysis.) They started working on songs together and formed the band in 2018 with bassist Wunna Lian, guitarist Thawng Ling and drummer Sai Wai Hpone Myat. Their first single "Only When You're Drunk" is an English duet song that reminds me of Lady Antebellum's "Need You Now" with the two vocals each telling their own side of the story to make a single narrative/song. This song features in this jam as the first English performance of Tagu Jams.

Their music is soothing and tender. Even though their songs fall mostly in the pop category, there are elements of blues and jazz that make them interesting. They said they love exploring different genres of music. And they are now working on their debut album which they hope will come out this year.

Cry of Hope performed a total of four songs in this session: Come Back (ပြန်လာခဲ့), Mae Naing Mhar Par (မေ့နိုင်မှာပါ), Only When You're Drunk and Healing. For the set design, we brought in some of the plants we've grown outside the Tagu Music office to create a garden vibe which I think really suits the band and their songs. For a decade, Tagu Films collaborated with various Myanmar independent musicians to produce music videos and live recording sessions.
