I just read her life story. Yes, she had an amazing voice, but she also persisted, conquering everything that might stand in her way. She makes it seem effortless. She developed her gift to the highest and gifted all of us with the resulting music. Howard University is rightfully proud, as should be all her teachers and coaches along the way.

Now, we all now that she was tall, and statuesque, and that she could walk onto a stage like a galleon, in full sail, and greet the audience as though they were in her own sitting room BUT, unless you've stood 9 inches away from her, (at a Wigmore Hall Sunday morning Coffee Concert, many years ago), you cannot imagine the sheer breadth of he presence! Ok, so I was overawed, (she was an audience member, that day, not singing), but even when she spoke, the timbre of her voice was thrilling. That day is one of my treasured memories! Thanks for letting me share!

Every time I see Jessye Norman in my recommendations, it is as if I have felt a great breeze of fresh air, even before I have listened to her singing!

Jesse sings the quintessential and sublime rendering of this quartet of end-of-life intimations of immortality. This recording helped me through the transition from a divorce to a new, happier life with the best man in the world. Now that he is dying of an incurable cancer, this music is again helping me reach past my angst to the light that pours from my heart when I remember all we have been to each other.

RIP JESSYE NORMAN.

Was lucky enough to hear Ms. Norman perform these in person. Was just jaw-droppingly stunning. At the end, I think the audience was so spellbound or entranced that it took them a few seconds to start to applaud, but then it was nearly deafening.

Im Abendrot -- in the afterglow... that we all go into that last light embracing peace. That would be the very best blessing.
Strauss saw beyond what mere mortals could see and the poem by Joseph von Eichendorff provided the perfect framework.

I find Jessye Norman's voice simply over-whelms this repertoire and it leaves me feeling the need to hear the music rather than having it drowned out with such force.

The first time I heard Jessye Norman was in 1984 at the Proms in London, singing Mahler 2 with Ozawa and the Boston Symphony, then the next year with Abbado and the London Symphony in Mahler 3 - an exceptional artiste.
