Once I got a pay day loan (in Canada) and I went in, on time, to pay it. I was told that the company had been taken over by a different company at midnight the night before so it was not possible for me to pay off the loan. Great right? Nope. I was told I had to reloan to pay off the previous balance, but it wouldn’t be due for two weeks but the crazy compounded interest would be re-applied to the whole $650, so say if I borrowed $500 initially and owed $650, (that I had in my hand in cash, and was attempting to pay right then), I had to instead reloan the $650 and owe $$825 on the $500 I’d borrowed 9 days before. I was told I had no choice. Even if I reloaned and paid it immediately I’d still owe $825.00 not the $650 my contract stated. So I reloaned. My paycheques were about $1000 every two weeks at the time. Then a week later an amount of about $300 was debited from my bank account by them. (payments were always made in cash, they’d never accessed my account b4) I was told they’d put an automatic debit on my account (on the date child tax credit payments were direct deposited by the govt each month, because they knew all poor parents would have some balance that day, which is why it wasn’t in my payday and was before the new amount I owed was even due ) in case I didn’t pay. They couldn’t refund it til after I paid the $825 that wasn’t yet due, in full, next week. Then she could contact head office and request they give the $300 back. Again I was never late on any payment. So I did that and eventually got the $300 back. The next month $300 was debited from my account again. I had no loan and owed them nothing. I went in and argued with the manager who seemed powerless to do anything at all on her own authority or that day. Except for offering to give me a loan for $300 to cover the $300 they stole that I’d been counting on to cover a chq I gave my sons daycare already. the $300 they stole from me could be worked out later. Of course I’d owe $385 to “repay” the $300.00. I refused to do this and got my money back several days later but I had to first sit at her desk, for a third time, (open floor plan so everyone waiting could hear) for over an hour refusing to move and repeating every stage of the process and insisting I get my money back. But it still took a few days.
Signing the initial contract gave them access to take anything they wanted from my bank account at any time, on nothing but their own discretion. The bank couldn’t help me.

Payday loans are fucking garbage. You're taking money from somewhere you already don't have enough money from, and then they take 25% of the loan. So if you pull 100$ you owe 125$ on payday and you prooobably needed that 125$ to begin with, then you get another loan of 125 to make up for the 125 you're missing and then you owe 160 on payday. Rinse and repeat you're rich. It's extortion.
