I remember when I first encountered Spikes at the GSC Elite Four with Koga’s Forretress. I thought it was weird but interesting

Game Freak did NOT remove any of the entry hazard moves because they had a "good impact" on the competitive metagame. They also added Heavy-Duty Boots though to give it another check

I love how crazy singles battles are with Pokémon. I used to play only VGC format and the differences in viable Pokémon and strategies between the two are wild.

Weird that Battle Revolution is the only game where entry hazards are always visible on the field. It's good to not have to remember that, hence why it's the same way in Showdown.

I wonder what would happen to the usefulness of Spikes and Stealth Rock if they weren't permanent until removed, but lasted 5 to 8 turns, similar to weather and terrains?

I just play randoms, but this made me realize some things i just picked up over time. You get your team, you check out the builds, and then you look for trap setters and figure out how to get them on the field safely- if the opponent gets traps and you don't, hope for Boots (Defog is almost useless when it shows up, Spin is better but is usually predictable).

The meta is dense, thanks for the video!

I have always viewed hazards similarly to boosting moves. If a DD adds 12.5% of a hp bar worth of damage and so does spikes, they both contribute to the same goal of a offense/HO style. You can now KO something that would have survived at 12% or less, meaning your outspeeding OHKOs are that much more likely. Spikes just also has the benefit of being usable on otherwise fairly defensive mons, meaning that otherwise teams that would have had to be fully offensively dedicated can afford to run a spiker as a defensive mon

After all these years, I still feel like there has to be a better way to check switching than entry hazards. Danged if I know what it is, though. PoGo-style cooldowns punish the first swap, and limited switches could slow down games.

X/Y was my introduction to PvP, thanks to being able to just casually hop in a match with randos online instead of needing to go to organized events in person. That's when I learned the true horror of entry hazards. Web to slow ya down, toxic spikes to wear ya down, stealth rock to ruin your hp, and regular spikes to chip in their annoyance too. Got to the point where every time I switched in a pokemon, there were upwards of four extra text boxes and animations that played. I still won a decent chunk of matches just by using unga bunga bonk strats, but every single game was annoying, dragged out, and most of all NOT FUN. My first day of competitive pokemon was also my last because boy howdy was it a slog.

Maybe a hot take but I really think that entry hazards should hit pokemon getting affected by moves that ground them, like Roost, gravity, smack down etc etc. It makes sense

@Wizard_Lizard_
@Wizard_Lizard_ - 06.02.2024 17:47

I want them to introduce a new entry move
• One that burns grounded but is removed by Fire types
• One that sets up on your own side of the field that heals you
• One that lowers all of the opponents PP by 1 on entry
etc.

There's a lot of potential with this mechanic.

I like spikes but as someone who has gotten into more comp pkmn around gen six, I see myself as more of a stealth rocks enjoyer just for how nutty that move can be. This vid makes me appreciate spikes more.

I would appreciate if more discussion was had around the newer generations. I love all of FSG videos, you guys are awesome, but I really want to get an in depth analysis for gens 6-9, especially nine, as there is for the earlier generations :-)

"It dosnt matter is you are quadruple resistant to ground".

No it truly dosn't when you reslide that the only type that has that quality is a bug/grass pkmn and that you might as well be using 5 pkmn instead.
