I sunk time into GTA2 back in the day, on PC. I remember the quests being frustrating, the fun thing to do was get up to a high wanted level and try to survive.

Explain why they removed it from Steam, that's so stupid.

On the old PC version you could eliminate the timer. Godsend. Also, never do the missions. This game is at it's best when you're driving off ramps, Guaranga, rampages, finding secrets, running from the cops, discovering the tank. The perspective when you're driving fast sucks, but it was fun as hell.

First level was nothing compared to last one in terms of difficulty. That was simply unplayable. I had once a situation like this. Had to deliver car to garage. Once i did that i started to read text which just appeared. It said that my car will explode and have to leave. Before i finished reading, i was dead😡. Whats more many missions include shooting to multiple gangsters who attacks you with machine gun. You die after one shoot, and aiming is ridiculus, so hitting anything is only by luck. So yeah "FUN" 😅

That tilte grinds my gears lols........ GTA 1 & GTA 2 Are still fantastic and so much better than so many other titles of that era , IMO its really pushing the limits for a DOS game , it was groundbreaking and ported to so many consoles let alone kickstarted one of the best game franchises of all time, my twelve year old cousin completed this game ! lols
plus playing muliplayer & showing me glitching through gates and The Tank location.

Great game despite the difficulty and that was just older games imo , plus there are cheatcodes anyways................. there still ingrained in my head LOLS
GTA1 is definetly dated the camera is painful at times.
The London Exspansion for me not so great alothough friends loved it.

Theres so many things upgrading cars (GUNS,MINES,OIL SLICK ,SELF DESTRUCT TIMED BOMB,) , kill frenzys , Wang Car Bonus (Flamethrower Fire Engine), the improved radio stations with hilarious commerciols, crushing cars in a tank takes no damage,the bonus pick ups invisability,electro fingers,Easter eggs , and ELVIS HAS LEFT THE BUILDING!

San Andreas OG for the shear amount of features and time period should be the GOAT. Must mention Gta3 for feel and first 3d plus MSX !!!! vice played and modded to death too lols.

This game was unreal and lots of fun when it came out!

GTA1 isn't bad it's just very awkward to play on PC. It's also super unforgiving in that you can't retry missions. It predates what we would consider "standard" PC game controls, and it was built to be an arcade game where the most important thing was points, not story.

It makes it easier if you have the map for this game that came in the case.
we used to unfold the whole map and look at it while we were playing.

You only played the single player part. The Multiplayer part was WAY ahead of it's time. It was basically a death match that had all the vehicles in sync (to the point where if you destroyed all the fire trucks, the cars would never respawn.) No game did that. The competition in this area was Carmageddeon (which was a race, but ultimately had some fun solutions to winning, including killing everyone) which also had multiplayer, but had very little sync to it.

This game is fairly easy though, if you grew up in the golden age of video games, the 1980s. Everything modern is too damn easy.

GTA1 and 2 are the shit.
Just not for younguns who are used to much newer easier GTA games.

I played this back in 97 or 98 and I had never actually beat it without cheats until last year.

GTA1 is the best version of gta. This was the shit on the PS1. This version looks weird for sure.

Fun fact there is of less of a gap between GTA 1 and GTA 4 than there is between GTA 5 and GTA 6.

I'm not an hardcore gamer at all. Giving up on games quite easily if the difficulty is too high. Yet, never found that one that difficult when I played it back in the time. And that was pretty much the only game with that types of control I played, so that's not exactly like I was used to it because many games were like that in the time. I guess people nowadays can't cope with a bit of difficulty, way too impatient to get used to a different type of Gameplay ;-) .

Wow it's so much worse than I thought

Some tips for anyone willing to try this game:

Drive carefully and avoid crashing, driving is hard but you get used to it after a while, but it's difficult to notice it when your car is heavily damaged so expect to die in seemingly random explosions at first.

Avoid shootouts. The SMG and vest can give you a slight edge, but they're still not worth the risk. Just run people over instead.

Always have a map nearby. You'll need one.

Remember you're not expected to beat most things first try, even if the game is difficult.

If you have the cops on you, immediately head to a pay 'n' spray. Don't worry, they're cheap.

Mind that too many deaths and you'll have to restart.

If you beat all missions but still don't have enough points, check a map for ports and search up the unique vehicles and side missions.

If you're playing on DOSBox, remember that you can use save states (unless you're using glide mode like Matto).

You can find guns and armour in crates. Punch them and drive over them.

I used to play GTA 2 a lot, completed it several times, even after GTA 3 release. Just driving around in a tank wreaking chaos was fun. GTA 1 though? I played it some but never even close to completion. It's insanely hard.

Now this is what started me on GTA in 2001, months before III was launched. Was at a mate's house studying and he popped up his PS1 when we were done. Played a handful of games and one of those was GTA. Never looked back since.

I never played the original GTA but GTA 2 on the other hand, played the absolute hell out of that back in the day and in my view it's still a great game to this day. Different from GTA games nowadays but by no means bad, it's so much fun to play.

i oved this game when i was a kid, but they did come with physical maps, something you can not play the without becuse you will most defo get lost.

Apparently if this game is played on a computer slow enough it actually will be easier to play
