another possible reason is if the spokes are loose and/or the wheel is too untrue. thats what happened to my bike.

now you can as well give it a wipe, clean it up and maybe one day you can try to service and grease all the moving parts, it's about time

just change a new hanger, the bent hanger is easy to break.

too many times, the damn thing just snaps on me. I hate selling bending the hanger as a service. cause it just weakens it for the unknown next time the hanger comes in snapped off.

Here’s what I can’t figure out… why not remove the mech hanger and straighten it on an anvil of in a vice? They’re almost always flat when new and aren’t hard to remove.

Its a great tool, but the wheel should've had a chain guard on rim / wheel. Its saves from catastrophic issues while pedaling.

I always make sure the wheel is sitting in the drop outs properly before doing anything else

Just put on a new hanger. The existing is just being weakened buy the bang that put it off square; and weakens it even more when it was bent back square.
