Having studied martial arts under a descendant of Samurai, and striving to live by Bushido (the mistakenly named “Samurai code” [in my opinion]), I am not surprised by Ronin being a significant part of Samurai history. I say this because of the inevitable clash between Bushido and politics or hierarchy. To wrap Bushido into the choices of power-corrupted men is a misunderstanding, which permeates this documentary.

Wait a min here, did they just say that Jesuits brought gun powder technologies to Japan. Considering thier neighbors, the Chinese invented gun powder, and earlier it said how Japan admired thier neighbors so much, I'm almost positive that Japan had gun powder technologies well before the arrival of the Jesuits.. they might not have had artillery pieces, like the Cannons on a ship..

Quite outdated. The samurai were far from being honorific and loyal and the whole Bushido code was a made-up ideology that emerged much more recently.

Samurai are still fascinating and intriguing.

I feel that Japanese society is very much influenced by ancient China and it is reflective of this point such as the practises and courtly structure that was employed.
Ancient China was considered the centre of the universe to Asian cultures, so all Asian nations that were further away from China were seen as less civilised or barbarian.
Japan went through a serious of different periods, where culture and the arts flourished.
But ever present was the fuedal lords and the constant threat of civil wars between the ruling classes of warriors.. and war lords. Again, very similar to Ancient China which had long periods of fueding nations and war lords which sought further power and control over the emperor and the nation.
The only difference with Japan is the geological nature of the country. As an island, there was very limited opportunity for new ideas or war from outside forces such as what China experinced such as the mongol conquests.
The Japanese war lord which ruled over all the other war lords, was able to do so with suspicion and rigid rules to prevent disobedience.
The country was blocked from all outside forces and trade was only done on a select region in the South of Japan..
Modernization of Japan was later done to prevent befalling Japan what had happened to Ming China, with western nations carving up the country.. the Empire of Japan then changed it's attitude to one of outward conquest in the nature of European nations of that time, the only difference between the brutality in which they sought to conquer adversaries.. like in the case of Korea, South East Asia and South Asia. All were under imperial Japanese rule and though the Empire of Japan last only 45 years, it had the world's most populated empire.. during that time period which is truly astounding when you consider it.
Modern Japan is vexed by this history though as they still can't have a military, the countries that surround Japan see it with anger or suspicion at least politically and they have no opportunity to get back territories lost to Russia or China during the end of the second world war.
While, Japan is a country of interest and uniqueness.
Finally, I feel Japanese people are for the most part shy, polite, amicable and well-ordered. There culture and land is one which faced constant threat of civil war and natural distasters and you can see their strength of character is reflective of such a turbulent environment.
Overall, it is a good place to live but modern Japan faces several challenges.. an incredibly low birth rate, aging population, massive state debt, black work culture, weak yen, high taxes, high inflation.

There are too many errors in this video. For example, beg9nning with the so-called creation of Japan, the actual legend according to Kojiki (the chronicle of myths) is that Japan was created when Izanagi and Izanami (two diving beings) dip a spear into the water of the universe, and the drops give rise to the islands of Japan - NOT from the tears of a goddess. Another major error is that the Emperors of Japan were "Shintoists", especially since they were the head of the Shinto religion. And the accompanying musical soundtrack was not Japanese.

Whoever completed the background information for this video was a moron.

Also the Katana was not tye primary "go to" weapon of the Samurai. Samurai began as horse mounted archers first, when they became foot soldiers they used the Naginata and the Yari first. The Katana was a weapon of last resort.
