Kim Jong-un Furious After North Korea Warship Sinks on Launch

It should have been another moment of self-proclaimed glory for Kim Jong-un: the christening of a powerful new weapon designed to smite his South Korean and American enemies.

Instead, the North Korean leader was reduced to fury after the botched launch of a new naval ship, which left it damaged and wallowing on its side, causing the “collapse” of the country’s “dignity and self-respect”.

The accident took place on Wednesday at the shipyard of Chongjin, a city on North Korea’s east coast, close to the Russian border. With the relative openness that is characteristic of Kim, the accident has been reported prominently in the state media.

The Rodong Sinmun, the newspaper of the Workers’ Party of Korea, described in detail on its front page the disaster that befell the new destroyer, which was being launched sideways. The bow lagged behind the stern and became stuck, causing the bottom of the vessel to be crushed.

“After watching the whole course of the accident, the respected comrade Kim Jong-un made [a] stern assessment, saying that it was a serious accident and criminal act caused by absolute carelessness, irresponsibility and unscientific empiricism which is out of the bounds of possibility and could not be tolerated,” the newspaper reported.
