I bought a desert sled. I’m not a hipster. I’m a redneck biker with a good job. I’m also 6’3” and kinda fat. It’s one of the few bikes that has the ergonomics I need. I love it. Perfect all around bike for me. It’s also highly underrated road machine that carves twisties well and can cruise at interstate speeds easily. And….. It’s very stable on the Highway.

The only scrambler worthy of the name is the Ducati Desert Sled. Maybe the Triumph 400x (XE pending?) might come close.

Dual sports just don’t do long road runs well - thus the Desert Sled. The industry needs more of these style bikes including a higher performance 650 air and oil cooled single with a wide ratio six speed gear box

DR-Zs are basically dirtbikes with lights. The K and E aren't even street-legal in the USA.

Admittedly, most modern scramblers need more dirty bits, but one could also start with a pure streetbike, like a TU250X or Nighthawk 250, and build a scrambler out of it.

122k miles later my 2013 900 seems okay in the dirt. Is a KLX230 going to run circles around it, sure, as long as it’s trailered to the ride. Does it have a 50 gallon gas tank and carry your house like a GS1250, no, but it also coasts 3x less.

My 2013 Scrambler 900 checked all the boxes I needed it to:
-Simple engine
-No nanny electronics
-EFI
-Easy to maintain
-Can easily highway 2up
-Relatively lightweight
-Could do some off-road, at the time of purchase I had no idea how far I’d take that

Was out ridding with dual-sports in the Appalachian Mountains when a person on a KLX300 asked me, “why I didn’t ride a smaller dual sport, it’d be way easier.” My response was, that’s not the point, it’s the challenge. It’s to be able to use a daily for almost anything and not need another vehicle to get it there.

I’d say it does Scrambler well, but not in a since of yesteryear when you could drive out of the garage into a trail. It fits in the modern world, at least where I am, a time when you’ll need to do some distance before getting to good dirt.

scramblers truly were just a bit of a trend for awhile. when ducati dropped its scrambler collection, they advertised the Desert X as one of them, before they altered it to look more like a Teneree than anything else. By now, the desert sled is also not being manufactured anymore, even if the site says it does in certain countries. Models like the Icon or the nightshift are obviously made for city/Street riding, hence the higher price for the the Icon even though it was meant to be a cheaper model under the desert sled. People love pretending to do something they don't, and the best way to do that is to ride a bike made for different terrains in the city. the sheer amount of BMW R nine T off road convertibles I've seen this summer in my city alone should be proof enough that people like the drip more than the drop. Currently, the desert sled is going for 9k-11k in germany. These are used bikes, obviously, as the best scrambler models love being discontinued for no reason. Take the Husqvarna 701 Svatpillen for example... its 2023 and the 2024 Eicma models have all dropped now. I pray that brands take a slice from Ducatis new shift towards the dirt and start pushing out some authentic scrambler models again.

EDIT: i cant believe the reccomded "real" Scrambler in this video is a "Dual Sport" bike. That is a true Enduro bike. If one is going to go the Enduro route, i would reccomend the CRF models over anything else..

I like scramblers. Had a couple if Honda 305 scramblers in the 60's. Rode a 1963 Triumph TR6 fir a long time. Rode it on lhe local motocross track once in a while. To me a scrambler is just a road bike with a little better suspension and available dirt tires. I'm waiting for the Royal Enfield 650 scrambler. It might work for me. For now my 400 ADV bike is working

I cannot believe I wasted 11 minutes of my time watching this terrible stupid rant. People who buy scramblers buy them for very good reasons. They look great and they don’t want to jerk around on the dirt. If they did, yes they would buy a dual sport.

People from western countries have no idea how bikes are used in developing countries. For example, in my country India, the city roads are worse enough to be called off-roads and i would say that these roads give a reason for scramblers to exist. You will never be able to take a bike with a 17 inch wheel and 130 mm travel beyond 60kmph without sacrificing your bike and your back😂. ADVs are a overkill if you are not going to take your bike for proper off-road stuff

You should look at the Scram 411 that is available now. Based on an adventure bike (so it isn't fake), with the benefit of being cheaper and better looking. They are also cheap and simple, only basic modern amenities. You aren't afraid of hurting it cause its not expensive and also super simple to work on. They aren't pretentious, India being the main market, I just can't attribute that to being hoity toity. It ticks all your marks for being an actual scrambler that isn't tied to the stereotypes.

Learn how to ride then pretty much anything can be a "dirt bike". I see people who can't ride ridding "dirt bikes" ie a CRF450 and they don't know how to ride well enough to even hit a jump, so that's no better than hipsters buying scramblers and taking them off road down a trail.

Although I mostly agree, I will say that I have taken my "urban explorer" scrambler Svartpilen 401 across the Peruvian Andes (several times) through paved and non-paved roads. Once, I rode approximately 150 km of pure dirt at more than 4000 meters above sea level; another time, I trip of 50 km of also dirt reaching 4950 meters above sea level. So, the urban explorer can really scram

idk what hipster did to hurt your feelings lmao but just get what you like and enjoy it. It's their money just cuz your broke and don't want to hurt your 10-15k bike lol the Harley are dying breed for cruisers they only live for heritage because once all these boomers die the younger gen riders will want something trendy or there taste, the boomers they grew up knowing bobbers and lowrider cruisers and smaller cc sport bikes and dirt bikes. Sport bikes is not for everyone same for dirt offroad for the extremes. its a hybrid new things evo. change not ever one wants ass/back hurting sport bike or super big touring bike, big cruiser or dirt bike. Scrambler IMO just gives more options for other riders who can enjoy the ride explore good performance with some comfort for short rides around town or even long if up for the challenge and maybe go off trail for better views etc. Heritage who gives a fuck if its NoT a ReAl ScRaMbLeR lol better than electric bike at least, you cant please everyone

As a rider of a 2012 Raider 1900 and a Triumph Scrambler 900, I can honestly tell you there IS a difference between riding the two on my 2 miles of crappy dirt roads. The Raider was NOT made for that kind of punishment. Plus repairs and maintenance on the Raider vs the Scrambler after daily use on those roads will prove easily that the Scrambler is the better choice. I also paid less than a fraction for my scrambler :)

If you rode and race dirt bike in the real world you know what a dirt bike is, however a "dirt bike" would suck on the street. Dude, the idea is to ride to the place you are going to go off road. Oh yea, and then ride home. I live is So Cal, so that means, well, a ride home, so a Ducati mean some comfort and performance on and off road. Not just one or the other. Scramblers are cool cuz both, sort of...

if you want real off road capability, but cool retro looks....
look up a "tracker" where people mod out duel sports and dirt bikes with old retro street tanks, and custom seats to make em look like a scrambler or cafe racer, but they still retain all the real travel and suspension of a duel sport / dirt bike.
you guys should make a video about those =)

Back in the late 70s I climbed mountains in Colorado on rough jeep trails that required winches in the bad spots on a Honda street bike. I've ridden trails and jumped a CX500. THAT is what a scrambler is about. Dirt biking on what you have. Neither Honda could out do my Pentons or KTM, but as a boomer, I wouldn't touch a modern bike. Especially an over technological one that's hijacking the name scrambler. At the most, they're duel purpose.
