As far as the guy saying South Korea wouldn't help defend Japan, he is correct. Japan would voluntarily likely take part in helping defend South Korea, but South Korea would try to avoid having to defend Japan. The reason is simple, it's about geography. South Korea is attached by land basically to China, yes I know NK is there but NK is effectively Chinese land, the NK's wouldn't oppose China's army marching through their lands for example to attack SK.

What does it mean? It means SK will attempt to avoid joining a conflict if they can, because they can be directly marched on by China, and China's ground army is huge.
So then why would Japan itself likely voluntarily try to help defend South Korea?
Simple, Japan can't be invaded by China's huge ground army, and South Korea is the historical entry point of land to the try to invade Japan, basically meaning that if South Korea got taken over by either NK or China, it would deteriorate Japan's national security significantly and put Japan's lands such as Tsushima, Iki and even Kyushu at high risk of future invasion.

This is really why Japan cares about SK and Taiwan continuing to exist, because they are both gateways into Japan, and if they are taken over and ruled by something like the CCP or Kim Jong Un regime, then Japan is then as risk of being attacked and invaded from that entry point.
