This is a drop-dead gorgeous 1920s Paramount (Lange) Style B melody banjo. It has a 15 1/4” scale length so it can pull double-duty and be tuned either as a 4-string mandolin (as heard here) or as far down as CGDA tenor tuning with comfort and ease.
It’s got all the stuff — a big wide rim, fancy trim and inlay all over the neck, the big old tonering and full-on resonator — all of it! It’s, of course, quite loud and very authoritative. For a mandolin player, one can really get a good “tenor banjo” sound with 4-string banjo-mando setups like this guy here — while also not having to relearn all of your chord shapes’ names.
