Great looking and playable game in it's time. Already mentioned, but the cpc does have more levels mate.

'Slightly tough' my ass! I know I say this a great deal BUT this was a c64 game: designed and intended for old faithful! In my 'he's biased' defense, I accept games like Dizzy are Speccy games through and through. Barbarian, however: the washed-out, earthy 64 colours, SID music/sound, no contest. The sequel was a little weird, hey? A little bit of a fail action adventure. Got ridiculously good reviews at the time, though. FYI Psygnosis made a different 16bit Barbarian (with 8bit ports).

The Amstrad vesion had the courtyard level ( with Drax and the princess looking from above ) and a level in the woods. I am sure for this, because i had the game on my CPC and loved it :) But i agree that the commodore version is a bit better :) - the sound of the clash of the swords and the nice Conan-like theme that plays do add much to the game :)

I only had the c64 version, which was great and had the sequel, although unrelated, would you consider reviewing the awful c64 highlander, i dont know if it came for the others, i remember a scrolling demo in a computer shop.

Was the Amstrad-version the only one that had the lovely woods level? Squirm13: Highlander was released on the Amstrad CPC too - probably as bad as the C64-version. Nice music though

The amstrad game was parted in 4 parts. The woods, the desert, the dungeon & the throne room. Each part was its own game really. In the woods & desert you couldnt face drax, as the 8th opponent just kept respawning (tape side 1), but The dungeon & throne room was the 9th opponent and you could end the game (tape side 2). Also worth mentioning is the many nice modes this game has. C64 does have some nice meaty sound fx there.

Who can forget Maria Whittaker on the box cover... Best cover box ever in my opinion.

What annoys me about this game the most is that while the CPC version looks the best already, it could have been so much better if they hadn't just used the same sprites as the C64 version which kept to the same limits as C64 sprites (the lack of colour and shading) when the CPC was capable of so much better.  I was never a big fan of the gameplay though. I found it just too sluggish to be all that fun.

The CPC version is sluggish because it uses the c64 routines emulated in z80 ! You talk about a feat ! :(
