I am a 45yr old do it yourselfer. I'm by no means a professional mechanic. Working on cars has sort of become a hobby for me and I take my time because I actually enjoy fixing broken things it brings me peace. Thank you for the great content I remember the first video I watched of yours I hit the subscribe button right away.

You hit the nail on the head, when you said give yourself some time. I changed the oil on my wife’s car (05 Mazda 6), for the first time and I had to run to the auto store to get the proper tool to take the filter off. Keep the videos coming….

Best advise ever. I just did a 40th oil change on my 2006 Matrix with 199,921 miles and she still runs perfect. 5k OCI with 5w-30 full synthetic and oem filter. I think I saved almost $3000 on oil changes.

I used to be afraid of doing vehicle repairs, fearing that I'd screw something. That was years ago and after a $1200 bill from Midas for a brake job I started thinking maybe I could start doing maintenance myself :)

Automotive labor rates are insane. Been fixing and doing basic maintenance on my vehicles and motorcycles all my life. Subscribed friend

oil change was one of the first things I learned how to do. Now I've done my own for 30+ years. The only times I have paid to have it done is when I had a crazy coupon or had to have the vehicle in for some other service (such as warranty work). I agree that knowing that it was done, and done correctly, is very important.

The only auto services I pay for are AC recharges and alignments. Oh, and new tires.

Everything else is only hard the first time when I have to learn it.

Love it! Just found you and subbed from your PCV valve video. The satisfaction of DIY is amazing. Another pro? The $$ savings won't happen right away because you need to progressively acquire tools to even do the work. But after a few jobs/a few years, you are truly saving big $$ and now you have a well appointed home garage! For the cons, no risk, no reward! Having two vehicles (one winter, one summer, or just a few family vehicles) can offset the risk of downtime when things go bad. I've a few times had to get on my bicycle and ride to the parts store because things developed during a fix and I only had the disassembled vehicle available. Also, the most simple thing can turn into hours because a bolt may be rusty or you drop an item down into the engine bay.
My first oil change fiasco was on my '02 BMW 330CI, after I was done I fussed with the pan bolt and followed the torque spec. Don't do that! Just 1/4 turn after snug is fine, same for the filter. Well this car has an odd drain plug bolt that's partially hollow, I snapped the head off. I went for an extractor bit but I had completed the oil change, so I had dripping oil and no friction engagement. Lost my oil change, ended up pushing the sheared part of the bolt into the pan, had to take the oil sender out to gain some limited access into the pan, and fish for ages to get that piece and all the swarf out. Needed to order the right pitched tap and clean the threads up.
But, failure = success :) If you ever notice a big success (like a career served as we see here, or a great product, whatever) this means there was a huge amount of failure endured to fuel the success.
If you can't recall much failure, you might want to push harder.
But be safe! That first con is a big one!!
I'm too excited to find you channel. I'll bore you to tears if I don't stop, and just say, thank you and I'm very excited to learn what you've shared here on your channel.
