You mentioned there are a lot of saplings which are 89. The level you need to cut the tree is anywhere from -3 to +3 the level you currently have

You can also tick the tree for a faster tree in muttadile and for less damage. You do this by as soon as you get a wc xp drop you do one of the following: attack baby mutt with a trident or bp / drink a pot / click the ground. You then click back on the tree right away and should get another wc xp drop and then you repeat

imo doing mimic in high melee/ranged defence gear is way better than entangling the mimic and mageing him
