My paternal grandfather was born in Karelia in 1925. He fought in the Continuation War, and he then moved to Sweden after the war had ended because there were no decent jobs in Finland at the time. But he never harbored any ill will towards the Soviet soldiers he fought against! He knew that they were just doing their job in fear of being sent to a forced labor camp!

Try Valaam! My karelian great grandma was from Sortavala, but she evacuated to Finland after the winter war. Her son who is my grandpa hitchhiked from the eastern region of finland in kainuu to helsinki. I really want to go back to Karelia to see the villages, monasteries and churches.

Those kalittas are not traditional at all, they are usually filled with only rice. And usually we put jäiĉĉyvoi or egg butter on top. And the wrinkles of the rye dough is squeezed almost completely closing it from the middle.

It might be worth mentioning that Sortavala and Ruskeala were Finnish towns until conquered by Stalin in WWII, ethnically cleansed and colonized by Russians.

Karelia with the northern exit of Finland to the Arctic Sea had been stolen , taken by Stalin in 1940. !!! Why didn't you mention this ?? It is strictly illegal , that Karelia belongs to Russia now ....Fins had been deported from their homeland to your Siberia , and f....g Russian settlers have been settled in the Finnish Karelia ... it is very very sad . But your lovely Russians had been doing this with many-many-many little nations ( not only with Baltic and Polish ones ) ! This is in your "soul" : to kill , to kill the smaller ones -- who are much more cultured than the Russians . Your answer is : ??
