LIFEPO batteries have close to the same capacity, but wont start on fire if it gets wet, so EV cars need to go back to using LIFEPO batteries again, they are much safer.

Good points on EVs charging indoor and fires.
It will tak years till charging stations equal gas stations numbers.
Hybrids will burn just like EVs in salt water.
A water proof battery is needed or have states outlaw hurricanes.

Lithium and water, especially salty water, dont mix. Unless youre trying to cause an explosion and an extremely hot fire you cant even put out with water, and need hours of very expensive equipment to put out

There are verified accounts where Tesla drove through deep stand water after rain, which allowed water to get into the battery compartment and destroy the battery. Tesla will not repair or replace the battery pack. Everyone should know that most EV vehicle's Li batteries get very hot when you charge or discharge the battery, so most have vents with fans to reduce the pack's temperature. Yes, Teslas vent to the air. So, if the water is deep enough, it will enter the battery pack. I worked for a company designing and developing Expandable Li Battery Packs and Battery Management Systems. At the time, we created our Li packs to be sealed in a water-tight pack and used an external radiator and pump to use a noncorrosive fluid to hold the battery pack. We even used a 12 Volt heater to heat the liquid in cold weather. Most car companies will not do this since the packs are slightly larger and heavier. A few other notes about Li batteries: Some conditions are optimal for the battery to have a long life: 1) don't charge or use Li batteries at temperatures below 5 or 10 degrees Celsius, and some battery packs do not have heaters. 2) Only charge Li batteries at or less than 70% capacity; it is best to charge when ~40%. 3) The higher charging current will reduce battery life. During my time as an engineer working on this battery system, a 2C, twice as fast charge, reduced the life by ~ 3%. There may be new technology to eliminate this since Tesla has 4 to 5 C fast charger stations. My apologies; I tend to talk and comment too much.

Appreciate the video. Tesla batteries are actually sealed very well. Check out Sandy Munro’s video on it. Yes, there are some bad fit and finishes for sure, but much better build quality now. Nothing will happen to that Cybertruck in the rain water. The good thing with Tesla is the warranty. Most have 8 years 120 miles plus the 4 years 50,000 miles bumper to bumper. When you look at statistics on car fires on EV’s they are extremely lower than ICE cars. Tesla just gets the bad rap when you see some go on fire because Musk is hated by the left and mainstream media.

Teslas drive just fine in deep water. I've seen them with water 3/4 of the way up on the side windows and get through just fine. The water does leak into the interior and soak your upholstery, but it will keep on driving. Their battery bays are water tight.

I live in southern Ontario, so we get a lot of cold up here in the winter. They also SALT the roads when there's snow and ice. You can imagine what slushy, salty roads would do to a Lithium Ion battery. My wife and I both agree that we don't want an EV right now. Just too much bad press and range anxiety with these. Especially in cold weather. I think it's too soon to buy one right now. Once they can correct the issues and lengthen the battery range, I might be interested then. Might.

About 15 years ago when I was working at DOT, one of the studies that the human factors team was looking at was the fact that the electric cars are too quiet. This caused potential problems in certain environments (think a noisy urban environment, for example) where a person with hearing disabilities, or say a blind person, was trying to navigate crossing an intersection. Some of the experiments performed involved gathering data that about when a hearing-disabled person could detect the car which which was as shipped from the factory and ones we outfitted with a variety of sound emitters. It was all a farily preliminary study at the time, but I found it rather interesting.

What does this have to do with hurricanes? Absolutely nothing. Just saying that there are a lot of issues out there to think about.

I keep hearing the claim that anything powered by a battery will catch on fire if it gets in salt water.

Keep in mind ALL of the best military submarines are battery powered when submerged. While these have caught on fire before, I can't remember the last time this happened.

What makes vehicle electrical systems short out and catch on fire is not being designed to handle being submerged in salt water.

Automakers always have the option of sealing their battery compartments and including fuseable links between cells.

I'm an old guy with more than 12 ICE powered vehicles currently, but we love our EV for daily commuting. It is always plugged in when parked, automatically charges to 80% when electricity prices are $0.08/kWh, and is always ready to go for the entire day every day for all of our commuting needs. It costs about 1/4 as much $ as our hybrid vehicles to operate.

For all long trips and all towing, we use our ICE powered vehicles. While the EV is by far the best daily commuter, it sucks for these needs...
