In about the exact Geographic center of Taiwan, in Nantou County in the mountainous center, in the 1930s the Japanese government built a dam which created this reservoir. Now a major tourist destination for all Taiwanese to get out of the big cities, experience some nature, see the beautiful water, eat some food, bike ride, and more. Which we did all. The modern take on Taiwanese aboriginal food was delicious. Biked about 30 kilometers around the lake one day was awesome. Did a couple hikes. There is a Temple with a relic of Xuanzhang, one of my favorite stories from Chinese history, who was a Buddhist monk in the 600s AD who walked for decades around Central Asia, the Himalayas, and all of India bringing knowledge back to Tang China. It made its way here through the Rape of Nanjing in World War 2, was whisked away to Japan, and given to Taiwan in the 50s eventually the temple being built. It was a relaxing cabin experience. Riding boats. If you can you should go, but not on a Saturday, it gets too crowded. We were there Thurs-Sat. I have now been to every county in Taiwan except for the outlying islands.
