Conpares to earth, martian atmosphere is thin and gravity is also less. So little guel is needed to reach space.

It would have been SO much better if when the countdown hit 1 it exploded and they rolled the credits.

With such a small rocket, it is unlikely to be 6 seconds between main engine start and lift=off.

I love the idea of a poor starving child who is literally on Earth watching this and being like...um...guys...little help?

If this happened in real life it would represent humanity at it's absolute finest, one man, alone on an alien world surviving against impossible odds, and back home, for perhaps the first time in history, all mankind is united behind a common goal, and that goal isn't war, isn't defense of property, isn't a race to collect resources, it's all of us, united in the single purpose of not leaving a man behind to die alone billions of miles from home. I love this film.

Forget spending billions on space travel. You can fly through space holding onto a blue plastic tarp.

everyone on earth is on a time delay of 16-30 minutes so everything was already over by the time it started for them

The time delay to NASA means Watney was already safe & secure 15-20 min while NASA followed the mission in suspense

This shit is gas. When the bass drops and Beth is saying "Velocity 741m/s; Altitude 1350m" it's pretty awesome. Also when Beck is saying he pulled 12G's on the ascent. Those lines are fking fire.

The sobbing as the checklist is called just goes to show that despite his earlier decision to science the shit out of this, he never expected to be sitting in a MAV with his crew above him ready to get him.

The martian is a movie about a man who gets stranded on mars alone with no communication with nasa.

[the camera man]: Am I joke to you?!

Convenient unused, yet fueled ready to launch rocket on an isolated spot on Mars is well, convenient!
