The flintlock has become almost synonymous with pirates, many recognizing it purely as a “pirate gun” - and rightly so. Whilst the armed forces of Europe clung to the older matchlock, pirates and American colonists adapted the more rugged and field-expedient flintlock way earlier, and flintlock weapon systems would remain their favorite arm for the rest of the Golden Age. I suppose I could tell you something along the lines of “our understanding of the flintlock gives us a better understanding of pirates and their operations as a whole”, but really, it’s kinda just cool to talk about firearms, so I don’t think some sort of in-depth introduction is especially desired by anyone. In this video we’re going to take an in-depth look at how the flintlock functioned, but also the preceding technology which allowed for its development.
