Mohali-Rajpura railway line project approved | Bathinda to Chandigarh train | direct train Punjab

A major development is underway for the people of Punjab, as a direct train service from Bathinda to Chandigarh is set to begin soon. This initiative is part of the newly approved Mohali-Rajpura railway line project, which will significantly improve connectivity between the Malwa region and the state capital. The project, with an allocation of ₹202.99 crore, includes a 24-kilometer railway link from Mohali to Rajpura via Banur, eventually connecting to Bathinda, Abohar, Jind, and Rohtak.

The project, initially approved in 2017, had been delayed due to administrative hurdles but has now been revived and included in Northern Railways' plans for 2025–26. In addition, a 5-kilometer extension from Rajpura has been cleared to streamline routes and avoid engine reversals, ensuring faster and more efficient travel.

This new rail line is expected to be a significant convenience for residents of the Malwa region, who currently lack a direct connection to Chandigarh. It will eliminate the need for multiple transfers and reduce travel time. Alongside this, a 110-kilometer-long expressway is also under construction to cut the road travel distance between Bathinda and Chandigarh by 50 kilometers, offering further connectivity improvements and travel ease. These infrastructure projects are poised to boost both regional mobility and economic development in Punjab.
