The first day of May uneventfully didn’t allow us to properly commemorate LEI DAY (
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lei_Day ) while on the island except for the rather lackadaisical way of honoring it with a social media post.
By happenstance, our “lei day” ended up being about laying out the “lay of the land” so to speak when we decided to leisurely enjoy the warm sunny day (except for some early afternoon showers) by randomly supporting some local businesses.
We started out with a light shareable lunch of carnitas tacos and craft beer at MUCHO ALOHA, where we were drawn by the charm of its owner named BRETT who joked about that he is one of the younger Bridges brothers (he looks almost like Jeff). Small world, we sat next to our walkabout/ hiking acquaintance Paul & Maria, who we met at the MAHA’ULEPO HERITAGE TRAIL the other day.
Afterwards we drove to WAREHOUSE 3540 where we curiously went inside a huge storefront space that used to be a pastry shop now occupied by STUFFS & TINGS that just opened a week ago. We engaged in a long super-friendly chat with the owner named SPARKY, who really laid out the land for us with his super familiarity of restaurant choices both past and present.
We later inched our way to the adjacent DRIFT MICRO BAR where the owner/bartender JAKE astounded us with so much information relating to him having been a private contractor and having known some people and places that we also know. Hands down, I am convinced that as very much typical of island living, everyone pretty much knows everyone.
We culminated our day by heading out to KOLOA VILLAGE to have dinner at KOLOA THAI BISTRO for the first time, where, again, by happenstance we ran into our new friends, Debra & Mike as they were about to leave. We tried the Larb Lettuce Wrap and the Koloa Pad Thai which were hotter than the regular hot that we had expected. Met one of the team members named Nikki who were good friends with Debra & Mike as well. Over all, it turned out to be another amazing day with so much ALOHA SPIRIT that came our way. HAPPY LEI DAY y’all!
