Satyr Comma (Polygonia satyrus) is one of eight butterfly species generically referred to as "anglewings". The genus name means 'many angles' which their wings exhibit (disheveled edges). The name Comma is derived from a white mark on the rear underwing; it is in the shape of a comma, rotated 90 degrees clockwise. Hibernating as adults is a shared behavior. When conditions in Spring reach about 60F with bright sunshine some individuals will exit hibernation and the flight season begins. This usually occurs late March/early April. Finding a colorful butterfly with snow on the ground is a bit surreal. Look for this butterfly in the American West. Can be spotted in urban locations given weedy patches of nettles. Usually in wooded habitat types. Hints for locating this species follow in this short.
