I think both is actually a great way to add some detail and realism to your city!

Mix it up, different lengths and sizes of trees will just make it look better

You can use the Lego food egg shells for palm 🌴 tree trunk or 2x2 round with a flex tube in the center to have the flexible tilt

Gotta be honest, I like the first one more, it just looks more realistic

Just get the old tree piece alongside other project pieces so you don't gotta buy it all at once

I'd do type 1 for free standing palm trees and type 2 for goups/groves of them

2nd looks good and it’s more cost effective, but I agree with comments you should vary throughout!
