NOTE: Charles DORNBERGER (b. 1898 in NYC – d. 1944 in Reno, Nevada) – American saxophonist and dance band leader, who started his career in the reed section of the Paul Whiteman’s band. They met in 1918 during their service in the U.S. Navy: Dornberger was a pilot and Whiteman was training musicians for the army bands. Lacking any formal training, Charles Dornberger picked up musical abilities on his own and did it well enough on many of the instruments in the orchestra. By the mid-'20s he stepped out of the Whiteman’s orchestra to start up his own band, leading to a contract with Victor as well as the creation of a series of musical shorts for Warner Bros. Dornberger was not very prolific in recording, his last studio session was in 1929, but he continued leading bands for another decade, sometimes fronting as many as 35 musicians. When he retired from the music business, he run a bar in Santa Ana, California, known as the Circus Tent and returned to piloting the planes. This led to his death in 1944, when a plane he was piloting crashed, killing him and his girlfriend.
